Prince William will watch patients go under the knife at the Royal Marsden Hospital.

The British royal will visit the London medical centre next week where he will follow in the footsteps of his mother – the late Princess Diana – by watching surgeons at work.

The Duke of Cambridge, who is president of the hospital, will see one woman undergoing a breast reconstruction and a man have a pioneering operation to remove a tumor in his bladder without losing the bladder at the hospital’s Wolfson Surgical Suite.

While he will not visit the patients on the day, he will meet with the teams who perform the operations including lead surgeons Stuart James and Pardeep Kumar.

A Kensington Palace spokesman told the Daily Express newspaper: ”He is president of the Royal Marsden so he needs to know about and get to see as much of the work that goes on there as possible.”

William became president of the hospital in 2007, following in the footsteps of Diana, who was president from 1989 until her death in 1997.

Upon taking up the role, the prince said: ”The Royal Marsden does an extraordinary job in treating thousands of cancer patients every year. The standards of care and compassion of its staff are unsurpassed in the world.

”Therefore, I am delighted and honored to become President of the Royal Marsden and will do whatever I can to support its innovative and vital work.”
