Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh took a public bus yesterday (05.23.13).

The royal couple travelled to Cambridge, East England, by scheduled train service from London and completed their journey to the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) on a single-decker bus through the city – but arrived at their destination 15 minutes late.

Inside the research institute, the queen appeared fascinated as she looked through a powerful microscope at tiny mice eggs while scientists explained their work trying to discover why some women trying to conceive produce abnormal eggs.

The visit marked the official opening of the site’s new £212 million buildingm which provides better facilities and equipment for the 600 scientists and support staff.

Later in the day, the queen and Prince Philip toured a new £30 million extension to the Rosie Maternity Hospital and the monarch – whose grandson Prince William and his wife Duchess Catherine will welcome their first child into the world in July – was particularly interested in a birthing pool.

New mother Claire Morris, who had used the facility, explained: ”The heat is a bit relaxing and gives pain relief and water means you’re less weighted.”

She later joked: ”The queen was interested in the birthing pool, maybe she’s doing some research for Kate – who knows.”
