The Dutch Queen Maxima was overcome with grief as aircrash victims were returned to the Netherlands.

The 43-year-old royal visited the Eindhoven Airbase yesterday (07.23.14) as the plane carrying the coffins of the deceased arrived back in the country, reports Hello! magazine.

Queen Maxima was brought to tears and clutched her husband King Willem-Alexander’s hand as the victims of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 – which came down over Ukraine after taking off from Amsterdam last week – were brought off the plane.

Following the incident, King Willem-Alexander paid tribute to the victims of the air crash which is believed to have taken the lives of 189 dutch passengers.

Victims included Aids researcher Joep Lange and the Dutch Labour party MP Willem Witteveen, leaving the King ”deeply shocked”.

The 47-year-old royal said on Thursday(07.17.14): ”We offer our deepest sympathy to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims and to those who are still uncertain if their loved ones were on board the plane.”

The King and Queen also met victims’ family members this week and signed a book of condolences honouring the deceased that has been placed outside the Ministry of Security and Justice in the Hague.

Another book of condolences has also been set up at Schiphol Airport where the flight took off from on July 17.
