Riverside Museum to open June 21 in Glasgow

Tall ship will dock alongside Scottish museum on River Clyde.

Glasgow, Scotland is gearing up to open the new Riverside Museum this summer as a new home for the city’s transportation collection, reports the BBC.

Located on the banks of the River Clyde, the building, which was designed by award-winning architect Zaha Hadid, will house roughly 3,000 transportation-related exhibits in nearly 150 separate displays.

The Tall Ship Glenlee will be moved from her berth at Glasgow Harbour to dock alongside the museum. Both ship and museum are set to open on June 21.

"The Tall Ship will move to the new Pointhouse Quay on 28 April, so that the Glenlee can be exhibited permanently alongside the new Riverside Museum," said Dr Christopher Mason, chairman of the Clyde Maritime Trust.

"The ship will be a perfect complement both to Zaha Hadid’s building and the collections displayed inside it."

The city expects the new museum to become a big draw for tourists. In its current home at the sports and arts venue Kelvin Hall, the transportation collection draws about 500,000 visitors a year.

"Glasgow’s position as Scotland’s cultural powerhouse can only be enhanced by the opening of the Riverside Museum," said Gordon Matheson, leader of the Glasgow City Council.
