Robert Downey Jr. is to star in ‘Chef’.

The 48-year-old actor is teaming up with his ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Iron Man 2’ director Jon Favreau to appear in the forthcoming low-budget comedy drama.

The movie – which will also feature Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo and Bobby Cannavale – will see Favreau direct and star as a man who loses his job in a posh restaurant and faces being cut off from his family.

In a bid to kickstart his career and find favour with his loved ones once again, he decides to start up a food truck.

It is as yet unclear what role Downey – who was most recently seen in ‘Iron Man 3’ – will play in the film.

As well as directing and starring in the film, Favreau has also written the script.

Speaking about the production, the filmmaker – who is directing for the first time since 2011’s ‘Cowboys and Aliens’ – said: "Setting a film in the culinary world of Los Angeles offers wonderful opportunities for a character-driven comedy."

Production will start on July 8 in Los Angeles.
