Rufus Wainwright pays tribute to his mom

Some family and friends will join Rufus Wainwright in paying tribute to his late mother.

When folk singer Kate McGarrigle died earlier this year, a large piece Rufus Wainwright died with her. McGarrigle was not only Wainwright’s mom, she was also both his biggest fan and greatest critic.

All of a son’s love for his mother, as well as many other artists who knew and admired Kate McGarrigle will reunite on stage at the Meltdown Festival in Britain this June.

The festival’s 2010 artistic director, Richard Thompson, is one of the most respected folk singers of all time. He asked to be part of the tribute too.

Wainwright said, "A lot of people are coming in for that. One of the artists that I can mention for sure is the wonderful Richard Thompson and apparently his first request was to do something for Kate so I was very very touched by that."

Rufus Wainwright talked about his mother’s music during an interview with BBC 6Music. He explained, "Diving into her material and realizing how unique and powerful and effective the McGarrigle sisters were in both their songs and their recordings."

Wainwright will soon unveil who will participate in the tribute. It is not too farfetched to think that his sister, Martha Wainwright, and his aunt, Anna McGarrigle, will be on that list.
