Sacha Baron Cohen will portray Freddie Mercury

Sacha Baron Cohen will slip into the skin of Freddie Mercury in a new film on Queen.

Three years ago, a rep for Sacha Baron Cohen officially shot down rumours saying the actor would portray singer Freddie Mercury on the big screen.

Today, Variety reports Cohen will star in a film about the late singer of the band Queen.

Written by Peter Morgan (The Queen), the film will recount the life of the group, how it all started up to its participation in Live Aid in 1985. It will not cover the singer’s death which happened in 1991.

The project will be produced by Robert De Niro but no director has been announced.

Shooting starts next year. It is unclear whether Cohen will sing songs like We Are the Champions himself or if producers will use real recordings of Freddie Mercury.

Sacha Baron Cohen is filming right now in London. He stars in Hugo Cabret along with Jude Law, Ben Kingsley and Christopher Lee. The film is directed by Martin Scorsese and hits theatres on December 9, 2011.
