According to Variety, Hayek will both star in and produce the Spanish film. The independent project follows the forming of the musical group Grupero. Filmmaker Issa Lopez will direct.
It has been more than ten years for the star of the film Frida to make a film in her native language. The 40 year-old star will also sing on the soundtrack for the project.
Hayek will play a woman going through difficult times when her husband leaves. She then becomes a singer in a band, but keeps her new occupation a secret from her friends and family.
Filming for La Banda will begin this summer in Mexico.
