Scottish actor Gerard Butler has reportedly signed on for a new role in Hunter Killer, with Avatar star Sam Worthington being considered for a key role, reports Variety.
Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) will direct the film adaptation of the novel Firing Point by George Wallace and Don Keith.
Butler will play Joe Glass, inexperienced commander of a U.S. submarine that must team up with a Navy SEAL team to rescue of the Russian president, who’s been captured after a coup. Worthington would play a member of the rescue unit. They all must work together to prevent a rogue Russian general from staring World War III.
Worthington will also star in Man on a Ledge along with Elizabeth Banks due out on January 27, and as Perseus in Clash of the Titans 2 due in theaters in March 30, 2012. He is currently filming the sequel Avatar 2 which won’t be released until December 2014; and Avatar 3 slated for 2015.
Butler stars in Machine Gun Preacher, and is currently filming two movies for release next year, Playing the Field and Movie 43.
