Second cup of coffee won’t affect your blood pressure

Coffee consumption not associated with an increased risk of hypertension.

Contrary to previous concerns, a U.S. study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition revealed that coffee consumption is not linked to high blood pressure.

Hypertension is linked to heart disease, strokes, and a shorter life expectancy, and experts believed that drinking more than one cup of coffee a day spiked blood pressure.

But after reviewing six studies that tracked health data for 170,000 people over 33 years, researchers found there was no correlation between the amount of coffee consumed and blood pressure.

“The results suggest that habitual coffee consumption of more than three cups per day was not associated with an increased risk of hypertension compared with less than one cup per day,” said co-author Liwei Chen at Louisiana State University.

Although scientists believe more research is necessary since coffee affects people differently.

“People with a different genetic background may react to coffee differently,” said Chen.  “For some people maybe it’s safe to drink a lot of coffee, but not for other people.”
