Sex during pregnancy is safe

Contrary to popular belief, sex during pregnancy is not harmful to the baby.

There is a popular misconception that having sex during pregnancy can either harm the baby or cause miscarriage or complications, reports WebMD.

Unless you have a high-risk pregnancy, sex during pregnancy is safe. Specialists note that miscarriage in the first trimester is usually the body’s natural release, due to a chromosomal abnormality of the fetus.

However, in the second trimester, if there is any bleeding, vaginal discharge or burning, expectant moms should immediately consult their physician. Experts also note that these symptoms are not necessarily a consequence of sex.

The fetus is well-protected and cushioned by the amniotic fluid inside the uterus. Contrary to some beliefs, the man cannot reach the baby’s head. With regards to the fear that sex might trigger labor, this may only occur in the last weeks of pregnancy, due to prostaglandin in semen.

Experts recommend that pregnant women not spend too much time on their backs, so side, top, or on hands and knees, are better positions as the belly grows. You don’t need to wait until after you give birth to enjoy a sexual relationship with your partner, but it’s ok to exchange foot massages or just cuddle, too.
