Shakira honoured by UN

The United Nations awards the singer a medal for her humanitarian efforts.

Daily News reports that Shakira accepted a medal for her humanitarian efforts that help underprivileged kids.
 
The 33-year old Colombian singer is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
 
Her Barefoot foundation provides nutrition and education to more than 6,000 Colombian kids. The singer is also a member of the ALAS Foundation which promotes early childhood development across Latin America.
 
Shakira accepted a medal during a ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland on March 3 as part of the U.N.’s World Day of Social Justice celebration.
 
U.N. labour chief Juan Somavia has only good things to say about Shakira. He called her a "true ambassador for children and young people, for quality education and social justice".
 
Shakira met with U.S. President Barack Obama last month to discuss early childhood education.
 
The singer says, "Working with impoverished kids shaped my dream and my vision of social justice: to see a world where every child can live a dignified life with the opportunity to reap the benefits of a good education and a chance to pursue their dreams."
