Slumdog Millionaire House Destroyed

A house in the slums of Mumbai, where one of the young stars of the film Slumdog Millionaire lived, has been destroyed by authorities.

Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail’s house located in Dharavi, Mumbai has been demolished by bulldozers.

Municipal employees destroyed thirty houses in this slum on Thursday.

The 10-year-old actor told the Associated Press how it happened. "A police officer took a bamboo stick to hit me and I was frightened," said Azhar.

Azhar’s mother also explained, "They didn’t give prior notice. We didn’t even get a chance to take out our belongings." She has lived in this shanty town since she was 15.

Mumbai is a city of more than 16 million people, full of slums and shanty towns where people live in extreme poverty.

It was in this area where director Danny Boyle filmed his movie, Slumdog Millionaire. The film received eight Oscars and made more than 326 million dollars at the box office since it was released in November 2008.
