Smart pillboxes play music, track your meds, and call for refills

Days-of-the-week pillboxes just don’t cut it anymore. Now a slew of new smart pillboxes not only remind you take your pill but also track whether or not you did and report that information back to your doctor.

The smart pillbox market, according to blog Mobihealthnews.com, is about to "explode" — and here are a few frontrunners to keep an eye on.

GlowCaps
Vitality’s GlowCaps are cellular-connected caps that fit onto a regular prescription pill bottle. The cool thing is that the cap connects wirelessly to a base station, with both the cap and the station lighting up and playing music when it’s time to take a pill. Plus the cap will call the user’s smartphone, or the caregiver’s, in case a dose is missed. It also automatically sends refill requests to a pharmacy.

AdhereTech
This British startup hopes to edge out GlowCap by providing an extra service: the bottle can actually sense the amount of medication in the bottle and send alerts to prevent an accidental overdose.

uBox
This locking, spinning carousel, designed by MIT grads, connects to a smartphone app that includes schedules, a calendar, and the ability to notify family members about missed doses.

e-Pill
e-Pill is one of the pioneers in smart pillboxes and offers a range of pill containers, wristwatches, and alarms to keep tabs on medications, all marketed to seniors. The Monitored MedSmart PLUS pill dispenser stores and dispenses pills and sounds an alarm when it’s time to take it. The device can also call, text, or email multiple people if the user misses a dose.
