Smashing Pumpkins working on new album

Frontman Billy Corgan says album’s reception will determine future direction of band.

American alt rock group Smashing Pumpkins is working on a new album Oceania, and planning a traditional release after the lackluster response to their Internet album Teargarden by Kaleidyscope – a 44-track concept album available free over the Internet one track at a time.

He told Billboard: "If we’re able to get that sense that something is happening again and get people to rally behind us a bit, I think the next three, four years will be very interesting for the band.

“I think if [‘Oceania’] basically hits the same wall a lot of the other stuff has hit, we’re going to have to step back and really evaluate where we’re going, because it’s a tremendous amount of energy to put out to just feel like you’re throwing a pebble in the ocean."

Last April, disappointed by public reception to his Internet album project, Corgan announced that the band would be releasing Oceania, which he labeled as "an album within an album" with regards to the Teargarden by Kaleidyscope project.

Also, there are plans to remaster and reissue the band’s entire album catalog with bonus tracks, over the next two years, beginning this autumn.

Next month, the band will perform a 12-city U.S. tour, and then travel to the U.K. to tour in November.
