Snacking on raisins could be good for your heart

Healthy snack believed to help reduce risk of heart disease.

A new study underway in the U.S. hopes to prove that choosing raisins for a healthy snack could help lower the risk of heart disease.

Raisins are already known to offer several health benefits. For one, they are more filling than other snacks, thanks to their high fibre content. Rich in potassium, they can help to regulate blood pressure. They also provide a significant source of antioxidants, slowing cholesterol absorption and fighting disease.

A previous study found that those who ate raisins and started walking regularly benefited from health improvements.

Researchers at Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Research Center began the study last month, working with 50 volunteers in order to determine the full health benefits of choosing raisins over other unhealthy snacks like chips, chocolate and cookies.

The participants are given three snacks a day – either a handful of raisins, or one of the less healthy options. The researchers expect that the raisins will  lower the participant’s risk of heart disease.
