Soccer fans should keep an eye out for baboons

Baboon attacks on humans are on the rise in South Africa.

Approximately one month before the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup of Soccer in South Africa, authorities there are showing signs of growing concern about the behaviour of baboons. The animal is accustomed to circulating freely throughout the country, even in large urban centres, and is now attacking more humans.

Whereas baboons used to delight tourists who enjoyed seeing these magnificent mammals around, baboons have now lost their fear of humans. They have become aggressive, violent and even thieves. In Cape Town, there are even some who do not hesitate to bite people.

South Africa expects to welcome millions of tourists converging on the country for this global soccer event and is hoping to find a solution to this problem. The baboons’ boldness prevents authorities from finding a quick solution.

Authorities are asking tourists to be aware of the presence of baboons, monitor their bags and mostly the food they bring with them. The animals are interested in the food and are prepared to fight for it.
