Some competition for the Leaning Tower of Pisa

A tower in Abu Dhabi leans at more than four times the angle of the famous Italian landmark.

In addition to offices, a new tower in the tiny emirate of Abu Dhabi will house a five-star hotel. It also takes a distinction away from a famous Italian landmark. It leans at more of an angle than the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy.

The Capital Gate tower, unlike the Leaning Tower of Pisa, was designed to lean. The tower in Pisa was built in 1163 and has slowly moved since. Capital Gate was designed to be angled and its 18-degree angle is achieved by staggering the floor plates from the 12th floor up.

The result is a 35-floor building that is 160 metres high and has an inclination of 18 degrees. That’s over four times the angle of the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. That tower is a popular tourist attraction in Italy year after year.

The tower will house a luxury five-star hotel managed by Hyatt Hotels Corporation. Everything should be completed by the end of the year. The Guinness Book of Records recognized Capital Gage as the "furthest-leaning man-made tower" in the world.
