Spotlight on George Harrison

The Beatles guitarist is the subject of a new Scorsese doc.

Acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese enjoys making biographical documentaries on artists that have profoundly influenced his life. He made No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, in 2005 and recorded Shine A Light, a Rolling Stones concert in 2008 and filmed it in IMAX.

Now Scorsese is plunging headfirst into the life of George Harrison, the one referred to as the quiet Beatle who lived in the shadow of  Paul McCartney and John Lennon.

Martin Scorsese will direct and produce Living in the Material World: George Harrison, a documentary covering his life before, during and after The Beatles. In an interview with Billboard, the filmmaker explained his choice of subject. He said, "His music is very important to me. So I was interested in the journey that he took as an artist. The film is an exploration. We don’t know. We’re just feeling our way through."

It was Harrison’s widow who initiated the project. Olivia Harrison says, "It would have given George great joy to know that Martin Scorsese has agreed to tell his story." She has given Scorsese access to the family archives and is working as a producer on the film.

The film should be released by the end of this year.
