Stella McCartney designs for NYC ballet

British fashion designer helps out with her dad’s ballet.

British fashion designer Stella McCartney has designed costumes for the ballet, Ocean’s Kingdom, scored by her father, former Beatle Paul McCartney, reports Vogue UK.

Commissioned by the New York City Ballet, the ballet debuts today (September 22), and tells of a love story set in two fantastic worlds – the ocean kingdom, and the Earth kingdom.

At the dress rehearsal yesterday, a sneak peek at the costumes revealed striking body suit designs patterned in a style similar to Maori tattoos, accompanied by metallic headdresses.

Stella McCartney is currently preparing her spring -summer 2012 fashion show, which will debut October 3 in Paris, however she still found time to work with her famous father on the project.

“We’re cutting it fine with the deadline. But for me that’s normal. It’s the nature of my industry," she said. "For me, technically the pieces have to work. It’s not only a matter of working with design. The dancers have to be able to leap, twirl and stick a few people in the air."

McCartney has previously designed costumes for tours by Madonna and Annie Lennox, as well the Adidas sportswear for the British Olympic and Paralympic teams for the upcoming 2012 games in London.

The designer talked about working with her father, "It’s interesting. That’s a funny one for me," she told WWD. "On one side, I am a daughter working with her father, which is an incredibly remarkable experience in life no matter who your father is. It’s also quite an emotional thing. On another side, I know and understand I am working with Paul McCartney."
