Stella McCartney launches eco-friendly eyewear collection

Sunglasses will contain at least 50 percent renewable material.

British designer and environmentalist Stella McCartney is planning to launch a new line of eco-friendly sunglasses containing at least 50 percent natural, renewable materials.

Daughter of former Beatle Paul McCartney and his late wife Linda – an animal rights activist herself – Stella McCartney is known for her environmentally friendly designs; she refuses to use fur or leather in any of her designs.

Of course, being ecologically conscious is not always easy: "The greatest challenge was the amount of time that was spent on research and testing to get the best quality product possible with the highest performance in terms of resistance, while still maintaining the style and finish we always try to achieve," McCartney explained about her new sunglasses to WWD.

For her second eyewear collection, she insists that it’s important to have fun and be creative with the design.

"Women have two sets: a classic pair they’ll have forever, and a more playful pair. We’ve added that fun element to the line," she said. "My mum had this mad pair with Christmas trees on them that I loved when I was little. Sunglasses are one of the only accessories that can really have a sense of humor. But you walk a fine line between looking like a complete idiot and getting it just right."
