Sommers, who owns the rights to the first three instalments of The Mummy film franchise, is now negotiating with Warner Bros. to make a new version of Tarzan. Jerry Weintraub (Ocean’s Thirteen, Nancy Drew) will produce the project.
Weintraub and Warner have been working on a new Tarzan project since 2003. For the past two years, Guillermo del Toro has been in talks to direct the film, however, Toro recently backed out so that he would be free to direct The Hobbit.
Stephen Sommers will be co-writing the screenplay for Tarzan with Stuart Beattie. The Edgar Rice novel, Tarzan of the Apes, was written in 1912.
