Ron Asheton, the guitarist for the Stooges, has died at the age of 60.

According to Billboard.com, Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton was found dead at his Ann Arbor, Michigan residence today (January 6). He was 60 years old.

The musician’s assistant, Dara Hytinen, alerted authorities, after trying to contact Asheton for several days.

The cause of the guitarist’s death is unknown, but either suicide or drug overdose are not cited as the cause for the moment.

Asheton, his brother Scott, and singer Iggy Pop formed the Stooges in 1967, and were renowned for their theatrical style and energy. In 1974, the trio went their separate ways when Iggy Pop decided to take up a solo career. In 2003, the band reunited for tours and released an album in 2007 called The Weirdness.
