Studio plans Green Lantern sequel

Warner Bros. gives the green light to a second film.

Despite disappointing box office results Warner Bros. has decided to go ahead with a sequel to comic book superhero film Green Lantern, reports the Hollywood Reporter.

The film, starring Ryan Reynolds, earned $52.7 million dollars during its debut weekend. Revenues dropped sharply the second weekend to $18.4 million. Despite a $200 million budget plus marketing campaign, the film has only earned a total of $118.7 million to date, however the film still has to open in a number of countries.

With the end of the Harry Potter franchise in sight, Warner Bros. is looking to find a lucrative new franchise and is betting big on Green Lantern, based on the DC Comics’ series by John Broome and Gil Kane.

The film was directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, The Mask of Zorro) starring Ryan Reynolds (The Proposal, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) in the role of Hal Jordan, a test pilot chosen by an alien to succeed him in the running the intergalactic police force known as ‘Green Lantern Corps.’ A special green ring gives the mere mortal numerous superpowers.

Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Robbins, Mark Strong, Geoffrey Rush and Angela Bassett also star.
