Window 11 ditches cool-looking 3D emoji for boring 2D versions

Microsoft’s new emoji are headed to Windows 11 this week as part of a new, optional OS update. However, the new emojis look a little flatter than they should.

If you followed much of the Windows 11 development, you’ve likely seen the wild 3D emoji Microsoft was developing. The emoji looked fantastic and I was quite disappointed when I made the jump to Windows 11 and they weren’t available.

Now that the new emoji are coming to Windows 11, Microsoft has managed to disappoint again by releasing 2D versions of the excellent 3D emoji. As you may have already guessed, the 2D versions are not nearly as good as the 3D ones. While the 2D emoji lack the 3D elements that really made the set pop, I do think the new 2D emoji are generally better than the 2D Windows 10 emoji.

It’s also worth noting that Microsoft updated a post on its design blog from July about the new 3D emoji to note that Windows 11 will have 2D versions of the emoji instead. Despite the change, that blog post still says Microsoft “opted for 3D designs over 2D and chose to animate the majority of [its] emoji.”

The Verge points out that the change could be caused by Microsoft’s ‘color font format‘ for displaying emoji in Windows. It’s a vector format that allows for greater scalability, but also has file-size benefits for flat emoji, compared to something like a bitmap format, such as what Apple uses for its emoji.

Although Windows 11 won’t get the 3D emoji, that doesn’t mean Microsoft won’t use them elsewhere. The company is still expected to add the 3D and animated versions of the emoji to products like Teams. Whatever happens with the emoji, one thing is clear: you’ll need Windows 11. In the blog post update, Microsoft says it “still offers an assortment of emojis for Windows 10 customers,” implying the new emoji set won’t roll out to Windows 10.

Along with the emoji, the new Windows 11 update includes several bug fixes. You can learn more about it here.

Metallica working on 3D film

Metallica are working on a 3D concert film.

The ‘Enter Sandman’ heavy metal band are in the "very early stages of production" for the self-financed movie, expected to be released in summer next year.

The band said: "There is indeed a 3D project in the very early stages of production! We wish we could tell you more, but we don’t have all the finer points nailed down just yet."

Drummer Lars Ulrich added: "We tend to pay for these things ourselves. The minute you take somebody else’s money, you have to consider their opinions. And that’s no fun."

The group – which also includes vocalist James Hetfield, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo – originally had reservations about making the film, but were convinced when they found out it will involve the "biggest" live show they have ever performed.

Kirk said: "We didn’t want to do it at first. We were sold on it by our managers, that it would be a lot of fun and we would have a big-ass stage to play on – the biggest Metallica live show we’ve ever done, next-level stuff."

The band are also well into writing the follow-up to 2008’s ‘Death Magnetic’, working from recordings of jam sessions from their last three years of touring.

Lars explained to Rolling Stone magazine: "We’re about seven, eight songs into it. We do it in rounds. We come up with something, we leave it, go to the next thing, come up with something basic, leave it and circle back around."

Scorpions to release live concert 3D Blu-ray

As the holiday season approaches, those who have heavy metal fans on their gift list won’t have to look too far in finding the perfect present. On December 6, the Scorpions are releasing a live concert filmed in high-definition 3D to give fans the maximum viewing experience.

Get Your Sting & Blackout – Live in 3D was recorded using the latest 3D technology on April 15 of this year at a concert in the band’s homeland of Germany.

“Naturally, we could have chosen a show in Los Angeles or Moscow for the recording, but this was about a quick decision and a viable implementation on the highest level of technology,” the band explained. “Saarbrücken was a very good choice – our fans were simply sensational and gave us the chance to thank them for their many years of support with this project in Germany.”

On-site technicians used 11 cameras equipped with the latest 5.1 surround sound to record the show from multiple angles.

In addition to 30 minutes of backstage footage, the Scorpions perform 20 songs, including greatest hits like Wind of Change, Blackout, Rock You Like a Hurricane, Still Loving You, and Send Me An Angel.

The Foo Fighters’ new album, Wasting Light, won’t be available in stores until April 12, but samples of all 11 tracks are already streaming online, reports Consequence of Sound.

French music retailer qoobuz.com has included minute-long clips of each track on their pre-order page, allowing fans to get a sneak peek at how the finished album will sound.

Eager fans will also want to hit movie theaters next Tuesday (April 5) for the premiere of the new documentary, Foo Fighters: Back and Forth, directed by Oscar-winner James Moll.

Justin Bieber offers sneak peek of 3D biopic

The winner of four American Music Awards last Sunday (November 21) is offering his U.S. fans the chance to attend an advance screening of his 3D biopic, Never Say Never, on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, two days before general U.S. release.

Presented in a selection of theatres equipped with specific 3D technology, Never Say Never is a mixture of concert performances and ‘popumentary,’ recounting the young Canadian singer’s passage from obscurity to international celebrity in the space of one year.

"Everyone thinks this is going to be another 3D concert movie, but it’s anything but that. It’s a story of how my family, friends and the fans helped me get here and everyday are helping me live an impossible dream. That’s why I want them to see it first," said Justin Bieber.

Tickets for the February “sneak preview” event, will go on sale exclusively online on Monday, November 29. The $30 purchase price includes sneak preview movie ticket, 3D Bieber glasses, souvenir VIP lanyard, glow stick and bracelet, with a limit of six tickets per purchase.

Ironically, in the list of release dates on the movie’s preview website, the singer’s homeland, Canada, is noticeably absent. Perhaps his Canadian fans will let him know how important it is to include them, too.

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never 3D biopic opens in the U.S. February 11, 2011.

Lights, camera, Bieber

Young girls will be lining up at movie theatres in droves when Justin Bieber’s 3D concert movie opens next year. Everything the young pop star touches turns to gold and this film will likely be no exception.

It hits theatres on February 11, 2011 and is expected to be a big hit with the Valentine’s Day crowd.

Bieber is still on a roll after hitting the big time just 10 months ago. He won Best New Artist last Sunday (September 12) at the MTV Video Music Awards. That award is voted on by fans and proves that Bieber fever is alive and well. He also performed during the show.

As for the upcoming 3D flick, Director Jon Chu would not reveal many details. He did tell MTV News: "There’s not going to be acted-out scenes, and I can’t talk about the rest. It’s not your typical concert film and it’s not going to be a biopic … but it is about his life. I think it’s more of a documentary. We’re going to figure it out as we go."

Some scenes for the film were shot recently while Bieber performed a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden in NYC.
