What three words can save your life?

If you were in an emergency, what three words would you choose to get help to your location as quickly as possible? Smartphone’s GPS services are not 100 per cent reliable and, even street addresses can be too vague.

A new application, what3words, has assigned every three square metres in the world a unique and precise address, using three distinct words. The words are randomly assigned to each square and are unchanging.

Ontario emergency services are increasingly using the app to find people who are lost, like a 70-year-old Huron County man who lost his way going out one day in April and was not rescued until 6 a.m. the following day.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) introduced the app to locals December 1, 2020, and since, provincial communication centre agents recognize and are trained to coordinate emergency rescues with the app. What3words uses minimal cellular data to generate the three-word address. If the caller does not have the app already, dispatchers can send a link that can quickly generate the address.

“It’s a real game changer for us in the north,” says Andrew Hurlbut, the boating, safety, and emergencies rep for the Georgian Bay Association (GBA).

When the app launched, Hurlbut thought, Wow. The Georgian Bay itself spans 15,000 square kilometres. When you include the kilometres of coast and its 30,000 islands, “there are all kinds of places you can disappear,” Hurlbut says.

While longitude and latitude coordinates are just as precise, the three-metre-square approach is easier for the everyday person to relay over the phone, Hurlbut finds. This is why the association is actively encouraging their members to adopt the app.

“Whether I’m at my dock, whether I’m out back, whether I’m off to the side in the woods, or on my particular island…it makes that kind of rescue that much easier,” says Shannon Farquharson, the GBA’s communication and executive services coordinator. “My in-laws, who are in their 80s, have it on their phones, and my son, who is 11, has it on his. It’s something that anybody of any age can use, and can figure out how to use in a hurry,” she says. The GBA wants the bulk of their members to be at least aware of the app, and hopefully also start downloading it and using it.

Before technology like what3words, people relied more on themselves and good samaritans, Hurlbut says. Not long ago, marine radios were used to contact the Coast Guard—an asset in and around Georgian Bay, he adds—and rescues went from there, often coordinated by the Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers dotted around the bay. Otherwise, boaters relied on paper charts.

“Imagine,” Hurlbut says. “Big waves, rolling thunder and winds and this map is blowing around,” he says. “Technology has been a boon to boating safety.” He reminds us that outdoor safety starts with a few basics: “If you’re travelling out, it’s best not to go alone. Go with someone, and notify people of what your intentions are, where you’re going, and when you expect to get there, so people know to look for you when you don’t show up.”

For emergencies at your cottage, Hurlbut says to consider giving the three-word address for your dock if it’s the easiest access point to your property. Before you go off hiking in the woods, figure out the what3word start point and end point. This is useful for trips on foot and boats. “You can be 3,000 metres off and it can point you back in the direction you came from.”

Farquharson says the app can also help you mark, for example, a picnic spot you found and want to get back to. “Every family on the Bay,” she says, “has a story about a rescue.” On the Bay, she adds, quoting Hurlbut, “you’re your own first responder and you have to rely on yourself first.” A tool like what3words makes the responsibility a little less daunting. “If I can pull out my phone and say ‘911 can get me’, it’s a load off.”

Telus rolls out first phase of next-generation 911 service in B.C. and Alberta

Telus is rolling out next-generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) in British Columbia and Alberta.

NG9-1-1 enhances technological possibilities by sharing more precise location data, video, photos, and other information with first responders.

“In an emergency, every second counts, and information is critical. Bringing this next-generation technology to the people of Alberta and B.C. will save lives, and that is something that we at Telus are very proud to support,” Jerome Birot, vice president of voice and services development opportunities, said in a statement.

Telecom companies will implement the next generation in phases.

For now, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has directed all phone and cell service companies to update their networks, so they’re ready to provide services associated with NG9-1-1.

The CRTC will set a later date to implement text messaging services for NG9-1-1 calls.

Telus also says it’s working on creating a state-of-the-art IP-based NG9-1-1 network. The company notes the additional traffic of document and video sharing will be “strategically and cautiously loaded” onto the network when completed.

“Of the more than 5.5 million calls received to Telus’ 9-1-1 selective routers in 2020, not a single call was dropped, and we knew we could take this network leadership to new heights with NG9-1-1 and provide enhanced service to the citizens of Alberta and B.C.,” Birot said.

Sandra Bullock 911 call played in court

Sandra Bullock sounded panicked and tearful when she called to report an intruder in her home.

The ‘Blind Side’ actress locked herself in her bedroom cupboard after discovering Joshua Corbett in her house in the early hours of one morning last June and the audio of her 15-minute call to emergency services was played in court yesterday (04.09.15).

Breathing heavily, Sandra told the dispatcher: ”I’m in my closet. I have a safe door. I’m locked in the closet right now.”

The 50-year-old actress went on to give a description of the man and explained she had got out of bed after hearing a noise.

She added: ”I thought it was a wind blowing. Then I saw the person.”

Sandra – whose five-year-old son was not home at the time – tried to navigate police through security but was unable to open a gate at her driveway with her cellphone.

She worriedly said: ”Now my phone is not working so maybe they know how to override my system.”

When officers got in to the property, the ‘Gravity’ star was heard tearfully thanking the dispatcher.

The audio was played at a preliminary hearing – at which the actress is not expected to testify – during which a judge will determine whether there is enough evidence for Corbett to stand trial for stalking the actress, as well as various firearms charges.

Other evidence submitted included testimony from Los Angeles Police Officer Jose Bermudez, who described how Corbett was clutching a notebook containing a two-page letter to the actress and magazine photos of her when he was arrested.

He added: ”I’m sorry. I love you Sandy.”

Security footage showed the alleged stalker outside the actress’ gate on each of the three days before his arrest, while entries read from his notebook begged the star – who he described as his wife and said he wanted to have sex with her – to open the ”two large impervious gates” at the front of her property for him.

Following a search on his home, Corbett was charged with 19 felonies relating to weapon possession after he was discovered to have an ”arsenal” of weapons, including seven machine guns.

Along with seven charges for those guns, he also faces two counts of possession of an assault weapon and 10 counts of possession of a destructive device – believed to be red-tipped tracer rounds – as well as being charged for stalking the actress.

Corbett, 39, has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Porsche Presents the 911 GT3 R

Derived from the Porsche 911 Carrera 2, the 911 GT3 is a road car.  Though an extreme version is available, the GT3 RS is meant for open roads.  Now a new member of the family is being introduced: the 911 GT3 R.

This race car is designed to compete in the GT3 category of international competitions, including Le Mans.

At the rear of the car, we find a 6-cylinder 4-litre engine with an output of 480 horsepower.  The interior has been reduced to the absolute minimum, allowing the new Porsche not to exceed 1200 kilos.

Its style is unmatched, and so is the price.  The car’s sticker reads 279 000 euros ($440 000 CAD).  The Porsche 911 GT3 R will be officially presented on January 14, 2010 at the auto show in Birmingham.

A Mouth-Watering Porsche 911

A Porsche dealership, however, wants to deviate from these traditions and ring in the holidays with a chocolate-covered Porsche 911 Carrera.

Located in Holland, the show room housing the Porsche 911 delicacy must be kept at 27 degrees to prevent the chocolate from melting.

To reassure fans of the Stuttgart brand, the 911 Carrera S was first covered in plastic before being smothered with 175 kilograms of chocolate.

Porsche Calendars

This year, not one but three calendars are being proposed by Zuffenhausen.

The first is a general calendar featuring quality photos of the Porsche range, and will cost $59 USD.

The second one comes as a limited edition, and has been named the Style Calendar, with the Porsche Panamera as the central focal point. It includes 12 different representations of the sedan and a screensaver on CD-ROM. The price is marked at $81, with only 4 000 copies available.

Finally, the last calendar is an homage to several of Porsche’s past models. Some of them have never been seen before, which makes this gift quite the surprise. To unleash the suspense, it’ll cost $72.

Porsche lovers, you know what to ask from Santa!

The Porsche 911 Sport Classic

Visually, the tribute to history is an evocation of the legendary Carrera RS 2.7 of 1973, with a ducktail spoiler instead of the usual retractable spoiler.

The car also features Fuchs-style 19-inch wheels and a wider 44-mm rear body.  The classic grey model also comes with a double-dome roof.  The modifications aren’t limited to the exterior.  Inside, the car is equipped with brown leather upholstery.

Finally, what’s under the hood is also quite impressive, with 403 horsepower.  An optional sport package is available for suspension, which lowers the car’s body by 20 mm.  Limited slip differential is a standard feature on the car.

In order to become the owner of one of the only 250 Porsche 911 Sport Classics, you’ll need to hand over the dough, because the car comes with a price tag of 169 300 euros, or roughly $266 500 CAN.

Farewell to the Panamera and Cayenne

The power struggle between VW and Porsche has come to an end, and with it will come the end of Wendelin Wiedeking’s reign as the director of Porsche. Wiedeking was responsible for shifting production at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen factory, which formerly manufactured 2-door sports cars, to building SUVs and sedans.

Meanwhile VW chairman Ferdinand Piëch wants to get Porsche back to its basics. As a result, two Porsche products, the Panamera sedan and the Cayenne SUV, will be scrapped and will disappear at the end of their production cycles in 2016.

In the meantime, we may see an entry-level model, based on a VW platform, that will take after the Porsche 356, along with a sports car to be part of the Carrera GT line.

Porsche Introduces the 911 GT3 RS

Porsche is continuing its line, which begins with the 911 (Carrera, Carrera S), followed by the 911 GT3.  Now comes the 911 GT3 RS, which is the culmination of the model family.

A complete superstar, the 911 GT3 RS features painted rims and mirrors to match bodywork decals, a huge spoiler, bucket seats and a roll cage.  The car screams sportsmanship and the ability to grab asphalt.

Techinically, the car was designed to take turns, and take them quickly.  With PASM for suspension, and PSM traction control, the result gives the owner the closest experience possible to driving the GT3 RSR used in competition.

Under the hood we find a classic 6-cylinder engine capable of 450 horsepower, 15 more than the basic GT3.  The RS also is ten kilos lighter on the scale.

The car is priced at $122 400 euros excluding taxes (approximately $190 000 CAN).
