Office of Canada’s Privacy Commissioner signs MOU with Abu Dhabi counterpart

Canada’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Commissioner of Data Protection of the Abu Dhabi Global Market.

An MOU is a nonbinding agreement that shows the involved parties will work together on a common goal. In this case, it will lead to information sharing between the two organizations.

The OPC has similar MOUs with various organizations across the world, including those in the UK and the Netherlands. Canadian partners include Alberta, British Columbia, and Quebec.

“MOUs are helpful because they allow the OPC to collaborate with other data protection regulators when it comes to enforcement actions against organizations who may operate beyond national borders and beyond the reach of individual countries’ regulatory authorities,” the OPC says.

Coldplay’s New Year’s Eve gig

Coldplay are being paid £1 million to perform on New Year’s Eve.

The band – made up of Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Will Champion and Jonny Buckland – were persuaded to perform at the Volvo Ocean Race venue in Abu Dhabi by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed.

Table tickets for the exclusive event cost £4,300, which includes car parking passes, champagne and spirits.

Jonny is particularly excited to be performing at the venue because he loved his visit the last time he went.

He told The Sun newspaper: "I’ve never stayed anywhere like the hotel they put me in and probably never will again. It made Buckingham Palace look like a two-bed semi."

However, the performance will be an unusual one for Chris – who raises children Apple, seven and Moses, five, with Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow – because he usually does not seem them over the festive period.

He said: "We’re best friends who never hang out with each other except for 10 hours a day when we’re working."

Abu Dhabi the new caviar capital?

The emirate of Abu Dhabi, rich in oil and gas reserves, has long been associated with luxurious lifestyles and that includes caviar, of course, reports UK’s Independent.

So it’s not surprising to learn that the emirate has decided to produce its own caviar, complete with the construction of the world’s largest fish farm, a 60,000 square meter factory to breed sturgeon.

The plant has imported two dozen sturgeon from Germany to begin the breeding that will provide eggs to prepare one of the most coveted and expensive foods in the world, caviar.

By the end of the year, the plant expects to produce about 32 tons of caviar per year.

The plant is a partnership between Bin Salem Holding Company and United Food Technologies, a global specialist in aquaculture.

Due to the insatiable appetite of the rich, sturgeon has been pushed to the brink of extinction. The caviar made from their eggs can fetch up to $10,000 per kilogram.

$11 million Christmas tree in Abu Dhabi

The most expensive Christmas tree in the world could well be in the lobby of the Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi, the capital and largest city in the United Arab Emirates.

The natural tree is 13 meters high and originally cost $10,000, but after adding some very expensive sparkling decorations, the tree has appreciated so much in value, it may land in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The tree is draped with almost $11 million worth of necklaces, watches and bracelets sporting more than 180 diamonds, pearls, sapphires, emeralds and other precious gems.

Ironically, the UAE is predominantly Muslim, but since their guests are from every part of the globe, the hotel undertook this Christian holiday display primarily as a marketing tool.

The Emirates Palace is known for this type of luxury marketing, and in the past has promoted a $1 million Valentine’s Day package, not to mention the world’s first gold vending machine.

Abu Dhabi’s Ferrari World

Last weekend, F1 race fans could not miss the finishing touches being put on the most futuristic building in the world, Ferrari World. The F1 cars have been racing on a nearby circuit while Ferrari World is under construction.

The future Ferrari World park promises to dazzle fans. Adorned with the largest Ferrari logo ever made (65 m x 48 m), the park was built at a cost of 2 billion dollars.

The park includes the fastest roller coaster in the world. Four passengers are strapped into what looks like an F1 cockpit and propelled to a speed of 200 km/hr. For the more adventurous, there is a G force ride where passengers climb up a 60 meter high tower and drop at 4 or 5 Gs (4 or 5 times a person’s weight), similar to what F1 drivers experience when they take the turns during a race.

The public will also have access to simulators used by drivers for training or to familiarize themselves with a new circuit.

Ferrari World features a professionally taught driving school, the only one of its kind outside of Maranello, which is reserved only for Ferrari owners.

Ferrari World is a 10 minute drive from the international airport, and about thirty-five minutes from the city of Abu Dhabi. It will open is doors in Fall 2010.
