Costco discount AirPods Pros by $42, other retails follow suit

While Apple’s AirPods Pro generally cost $329, Costco has discounted the high-end earbuds with the MagSafe compatible case for $289.

It’s important to note that you’ll need to be a Costco member to take advantage of the deal. While this is a bit annoying, it does mean that you get Costco’s excellent return policy. The retailer is one of the few in Canada that actually accepts used earbuds.

On another note, Best Buy has the AirPod Pros with the standard Wireless charging case down to $249, but these appear to be sold out in most places — at least near my in Toronto.

Shoppers Drug Mart has the same model of AirPods on sale for $299, which is only a $30 discount. Still, you could redeem Optimum Points on this deal.

If you don’t think you want AirPods with silicone ear tips and active noise-cancelling, you can check out our review of the new 3rd-gen AirPods to see if they’re more your speed.

Apple shakes up second-gen AirPods with lower price, AirPods Pro with MagSafe

According to some changes on Apple’s website, the second-gen AirPods are now cheaper, while the AirPods Pro now ship with a MagSafe charging case — both interesting changes if you’re not sold on the company’s fancy new AirPods.

Starting with the second-gen AirPods, the price has dropped from $219 to $179, making it cheaper than ever to get into AirPods. Unfortunately, the new, lower price doesn’t include the wireless charging case for the AirPods 2.

It’s still available separately (for a hefty $99) if you want, but at $278 total before tax, you might as well just get the new third-gen AirPods for $239.

Speaking of charging cases, the comparison page for Apple’s AirPods lists the AirPods Pro as having a ‘MagSafe Charging Case.’ The same is listed under the ‘What’s in the Box’ section on the AirPods Pro store page. It’s not clear if this means the AirPods Pro now ship with a MagSafe-compatible charging case, since technically the AirPods Pro case worked with MagSafe before.

MagSafe charging pads offer backwards compatibly with the Qi standard, which means that AirPods Pro and other Apple devices that support Qi wireless charging, but not MagSafe, can still charge with them.

It’s possible Apple’s just branding this behaviour as ‘MagSafe,’ but considering the third-gen AirPods charging case actually supports MagSafe, I don’t think it’s a stretch that Apple stealth-updated the AirPods Pro case too.

Apple reportedly plans to release AirPods that can take your temperature

Apple is rumoured to have plans to bring more health-focused features to its AirPods.

According to The Wall Street Journal, potential health features could include taking the wearers’ temperature, monitoring posture and improving hearing. The Wall Street Journal says that the new ‘Conversation Boost’ feature that was recently added to the AirPods through an update could relate to the rumours surrounding hearing functionality.

These features “aren’t expected by next year and might never be rolled out to consumers or the timing could change,” says The Wall Street Journal. With this in mind, health features likely aren’t coming to the rumoured 3rd-gen AirPods that will reportedly be revealed on October 18th. Based on how Apple typically positions its wireless earbuds and headphones, this functionality sounds like it’s more destined for the next version of the company’s AirPods Pro.

It’s important to note that rumours surrounding Apple’s health tracking ambitions often don’t come to fruition. For example, last month rumours indicated the Apple Watch Series 7 would get the ability to monitor blood pressure, blood sugar and temperature, but that didn’t happen.

As such, it could be several years before these health features make it to a pair of Apple’s AirPods.

It’s now easier to find your lost AirPods Pro and AirPods Max

A recently released firmware update for Apple’s AirPods Pro and AirPods Max adds new features that help make the pricey earbuds/headphones easier to locate if you happen to misplace them.

Through Apple’s ‘Find My’ app, you could already view the last location where your AirPods were paired with your smartphone and play a sound to make them easier to find. Following this latest update, you can now activate a ‘Lost Mode’ feature that takes advantage of the millions of iPhones, iPads and Macs out there to search for your AirPods Pro or AirPods Max. If any of these devices come within Bluetooth range of your lost AirPods Pro or Max, you’ll get an alert on the iPhone regarding their location.

To be clear, this form of location alert isn’t as accurate as Apple’s AirTags since the AirPods Pro and Max don’t feature Apple’s U1 chip. This means you won’t be able to see onscreen prompts directing you to the location of your lost earbuds/headphones.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to manually push this update to your AirPods Pro or AirPods Max since it randomly happens when you connect the earbuds/headphones to your iPhone. To check the version of software running on your AirPods, head to ‘Settings,’ ‘General,’ and then ‘About.’ Once you select your AirPods, you’ll see a ‘Firmware version.’ If you have the update, you should be running version ‘4A400.’

Apple was rumoured to have plans to reveal the third-generation of its base-level AirPods during its recent fall hardware event, but the often-rumoured wireless earbuds didn’t appear. It’s possible we could still see the new version of the earbuds later in October or in early November during the tech giant’s rumoured MacBook Pro refresh stream.

Apple Watch Series 8 will reportedly feature body temperature sensors

Even though the Apple Watch Series 7 hasn’t officially been revealed yet, we’re already encountering rumours surrounding next year’s inevitable Series 8.

As first reported by 9to5Mac, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple’s 2022 Apple Watch will feature several new health sensors, including body temperature measurement. Past rumours have also suggested that glucose monitoring could also finally make its way to the Apple Watch with the Series 8.

Along with rumours surrounding the Series 8, Kuo says that health features are coming to Apple’s AirPods in two years. However, it’s unclear what version of the AirPods will receive the features. Earlier reports have stated that the next version of Apple’s AirPods Pro will include new motion sensors and built-in fitness tracking.

It’s also possible that Apple could have plans to release a fitness-focused version of its standard AirPods, though given the 3rd-gen AirPods are rumoured to be revealed later this week, that’s unlikely.

Rumours also recently appeared regarding Apple’s plans to increase the iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max’s top storage tier to 1TB. For more on Apple’s September 14th event, check out my round-up of everything we expect to see during the stream.
