Samsung’s next Z Flip might come with a new always on display

Samsung might be updating its always-on display technology, according to reputable Twitter leaker @Revegnus. According to this latest rumour, the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature iPhone 14 Pro-inspired always-on display.

Samsung phones have featured always-on screens dating as far back as 2015’s Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. While Apple only introduced its own always-on display last year, the company did so in a less conventional way.

By default, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max always-on display dims the entire lock screen. On the other hand, Android solutions typically feature a black screen with minimal text, while Apple embraces the dimmed wallpaper look.

Apple’s implementation proved controversial, with the company eventually giving users the option to revert to a more Android-like experience.  Now, it looks like Samsung is looking to give its users a splash of iPhone flavour in return.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is shaping up to be a welcome upgrade over the previous generation. The product is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Watch 6 this summer.

The iPhone 14 Pro’s always-on display is finally usable

Apple’s iOS 16.2 beta three has added two new key toggles to the always-on display (AOD) feature that’s available on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Now when you dive into your AOD settings, you can disable the wallpaper and notifications from appearing on the screen. This makes the Always-on display look more subtle, which I find less distracting. To test these settings yourself, you need to be in the iOS beta or wait until the stable iOS 16.2 drops.

If those conditions are met, jump into the Settings app > Display & Brightness > Always On Display.

One thing I enjoy about the AOD is it maintains the custom font and colour of your lock screen clock and widgets. It looks really nice, especially with some of the more ‘out there’ font choices. I do wish Apple would develop a more subtle way for notifications to roll through, but for now, I keep them turned off since they’re just too distracting.

Perhaps linking the AOD to Focus modes would be cool so you could set a notification type or contact group to be allowed to pop through the always-on display. One feature I do like on the AOD is the ability to see the now-playing information. It’s greyed out a bit to be less distracting, but it’s nice to always have play/pause controls handy.

Regardless, it’s nice that Apple is listening to feedback and providing people with more options to make the AOD less intrusive. Something that came up a lot when the phone was reviewed a few months ago.

It’s also worth noting this display shouldn’t impact battery life substantially. Apple says that it turns off the display when it detects its face down, in a bag, or when it’s being used for something like Continuity camera or has a Sleep focus turned on. You can read more about the setting on Apple’s support page.

Xcode 14 Beta suggests iPhone 14 Pro models to feature always-on display

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 14 lineup, including the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max are expected to be revealed at an event in September, and leaks and rumours about the line continue to pour in.

We already know that the high-end devices from the series are expected to feature a new A14 chip, while the lower-end devices will offer last year’s A13. The iPhone 14 Pro smartphones are also rumoured to get a new pill-shaped camera cutout and a 48-megapixel wide camera capable of shooting 8K video.

Now, according to MacRumours, the iPhone 14 Pro models are expected to feature an always-on display tech, a feature Samsung first released in 2016 with the S7 series and Nokia introduced in 2013 with the 6303.

The information comes via the latest Xcode 14 beta, as mentioned on Twitter by MacRumours contributor and iOS developer Steve Moser.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Apple introducing always-on tech in the iPhone 14. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently said that Apple’s iOS 16 will feature support for the tech, while another iOS developer, @rhogelleim, noted that Xcode 14 beta 4 features code tied to the iPhone 14’s always-on Display in its SwiftUI preview.

Further, according to MacRumours, the latest iOS 16 beta hints at a ‘Sleep’ state for wallpapers, which is likely a darker version of normal wallpapers to be displayed when always-on is turned on to conserve battery.

Always-on tech is reported to be coming only to the Pro variants of the iPhone 14 lineup, which are likely to feature adaptive refresh rate displays that vary from 1Hz to 120Hz.
