Amazon starts showing warning badge next to frequently returned products

Amazon is introducing a new warning badge on its website to help improve the customer experience.

The Seattle-based e-commerce giant is bringing the badge to its platform to address the issue of frequently returned items. It reads, “Frequently returned item: Check the product details and customer reviews to learn more about this item,” next to products that customers often return, as shared by The Information. The badge is intended to help customers make more informed purchase decisions and prompt sellers to modify their listings or products.

The move follows a surge in e-commerce returns during pandemic lockdowns, which has led to rising costs for retailers. On Amazon, customers can return an unused item within 30 days from the date of purchase. Further, these returns are generally free for the customer, which means Amazon pays to have the product shipped back. Considering the added costs of returns that Amazon has to incur, it makes sense for the company to crack down on returns.

It’s worth noting that the warning has already started appearing on products like certain record players and dresses, though the warning tag isn’t visible to all users yet. Also worth noting is that the products with the warning tag are those from third-party vendors fulfilled by Amazon. Some sellers say that their customers return items at a higher rate on Amazon than when bought from other outlets, a discrepancy they say is due to Amazon’s easy checkout process and fast Prime shipping.

“We’re currently showing return rate information on some product detail pages to help our customers make more informed purchase decisions,” said Amazon spokesperson Betsy Harden in a statement given to The Information.

Amazon’s new warning badge is a step towards addressing the issue of frequent returns, with the hope that it will help customers make more informed decisions. It remains to be seen how effective the new badge will be in helping Amazon cut costs on frequent returns. We are also uncertain as to when the badge will roll out widely, and if it will be available for Amazon Canada users.

Amazon-built Fire TV Omni QLED series now available in Canada

Along with revealing that its Luna cloud gaming service and controller are now available in Canada, Amazon has also expanded its ‘Amazon-built’ TV lineup in Canada.

The company revealed three new Fire TV Omni QLED series TVs and an all-new Fire TV 2-series offering that starts at $269.99. With this announcement, Amazon Fire TV devices sold globally have surpassed 200 million, according to the company.

Fire TV Omni QLED series

The Fire TV Omni QLED Series, now available in 43-inch, 50-inch, and 55-inch sizes, features a stunning 4K Quantum Dot Technology display with full-array local dimming of up to 96 zones, as well as support for both Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10+ Adaptive.

The lineup also features built-in far-field technology, enabling customers to find apps, discover shows, manage playback and control the Ambient Experience hands-free with Alexa from anywhere in the room. When not streaming, the Omni QLED Series uses built-in presence sensors to detect when a person enters the room to switch to the Ambient Experience. With this feature, customers can see glanceable information like their schedule with Calendars and Reminders, leave Sticky Notes for family members, control smart devices like a thermostat or Ring doorbell, and play audio from services like Amazon Music, Spotify, and much more.

Further, the Omni QLED Series can also turn your TV into an in-home art gallery at no monthly charge. Amazon even added hundreds of new images to its collection of more than 1,700 free gallery-quality pieces of artwork that can be displayed on the TV, including pieces from the National Galleries of Scotland, National Museum of Wales, Munich’s Pinakothek of the Modern, and more.

The Ambient Experience for Omni series TVs is coming later this year.

New Fire TV 2-series

The Fire TV 2-Series 32-inch offers HD resolution for movies and shows, while the Fire TV 2-Series 40-inch provides enhanced clarity and detail with FHD. Fire TV 2-Series lineup includes support for HDR 10, HLG, and Dolby Digital Audio, and the TVs come with an Alexa Voice Remote that makes it easy to find, launch, and control content and check the weather, sports, and the status of your smart home devices.

The new Fire TV 2-series TVs are available today, starting at $269.99. Amazon said that the Fire TV Omni QLED Series TVs would be available to pre-order today, but they aren’t listed on Amazon yet. This article will be updated with a link to the Fire TV Omni QLED Series TVs once available.

Amazon down for hundreds of Canadians

Amazon appears to be down for hundreds of customers in Canada, according to Downdetector.

The website shows complaints of an outage rise between 8am and 11:30am. As of writing, it appears the complaints are decreasing. However, that doesn’t indicate if the issues have been resolved.

85 percent of the complaints have to do with problems at check-out. Issues exist both on the app and the website. The outage is impacting Canadians from coast to coast, according to Downdetector’s map showing where complainants are located.

This isn’t a problem specific to Canada. Reuters reports Amazon customers in the U.S. have also experienced problems.

Affirm launches in Canada with Amazon partnership

Payment network Affirm is now in Canada.

The buy-now-pay-later service is launching outside of the U.S. with the help of Amazon.

Customers who choose to pay with Affirm on the e-commerce retailer will be subjected to a “soft credit check” to determine available payment options.

Approved shoppers who spend $50 or more can break their payment into monthly installments. Customers will be able to keep track of how many payments they have left. The company says a late or missed payment won’t be a cause for concern, as customers won’t see their total increased or a late or hidden fee charge.

“We are excited to bring customers shopping on Amazon.ca the opportunity to pay for everyday items and milestone purchases with Affirm as we deliver the same level of transparency and flexibility that customers have come to expect from Affirm across our markets in North America and beyond,” Geoff Kott, Affirm’s chief revenue officer, said.

Pixel 6a, 6 and 6 Pro on sale at Amazon Canada

A few days ago, Google put its Pixel 6 and 6 Pro flagships on sale. If that still wasn’t enough to get you to buy, now the Pixel 6a is on sale at Amazon Canada.

Unfortunately, it looks like only the ‘Charcoal’ variant is available at the discounted $549.99 price (the 6a regularly goes for $599). ‘Charcoal’ is only the second worst colour option, and for $50 off, I’d happily take ‘Charcoal’ over the much nicer ‘Sage.’

Those in the market for a new pair of wireless earbuds can also get a bundle from Amazon right now with the Pixel 6a and the Pixel Buds A-Series for $649.98. That makes the Buds A-Series just $99, compared to the usual $139 price. It’s worth noting, however, that Google and other retailers currently have the Buds A-Series on sale for $99 too.

Finally, if you’re looking to nap a Pixel 6 or 6 Pro at a cheaper price, Amazon also has the phones on sale to match (or even beat) Google’s deal. The Google Store has the Pixel 6 for $699, and so does Amazon. Meanwhile, the Pixel 6 Pro is available at Amazon for $949, cheaper than the $979 price for the 6 Pro at Google.
