Amazon’s Fire TV Cube can now connect directly with select hearing aids

The second-gen Amazon Fire TV Cube is the first streaming device with Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA) capabilities.

People with hearing loss that use the Fire TV Cube would now be able to connect compatible Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids to the streaming device. According to Amazon, “improving TV sound quality” was the top-requested feature among hearing aid users.

Compatible hearing aids would be able to connect to the Fire TV at the system level, allowing users to experience audio not only from their favourite apps but also from Alexa, music, navigational sounds, and more, by pushing encoded audio data from the streaming device directly to the hearing aid’s antenna receiver.

Compatible hearing aids include the Bluetooth models from American hearing technology company Starkey.

Here is how you can enable the feature on your Fire TV Cube:

  • To pair your hearing aids, visit Fire TV Settings, Accessibility, select Hearing Aids, and follow the on-screen instructions to connect them, much like you would with Bluetooth headphones.
    To control the streaming volume, use the Fire TV remote like you otherwise would.
  • For an optimal experience, we recommend customers connect over a 5Ghz wifi network, within 10 feet and in line of sight to Fire TV Cube. Due to the small size of hearing aids, their radio antennas require closer proximity for the best connection. Customers with 2.4GHz wifi can still enjoy the feature, with range that varies depending on spectrum congestion.

Amazon aims to expand Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA) support to more of its devices.

It’s worth noting that Starkey’s hearing aids are available in Canada, though we are not sure if the new feature is limited to the United States or not. MobileSyrup has reached out to Amazon and will update the story when said information is available.

Amazon is ‘not close to adding crypto as a payment method’

After rumours circulated suggesting Amazon might add cryptocurrency as a payment option to its e-commerce platform, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has quickly shut the rumours down.

In an interview with CNBC, Jassy said the e-commerce giant is not close to adding cryptocurrency as a payment option, though he believes in the asset class’ future, and that cryptocurrencies will “become bigger in the longer term.” In addition to digital currencies, Jassy also commented on Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), saying that it might be possible to sell NFTs on Amazon one day, and that the digital asset class that is currently plagued by scammers will “continue to grow significantly.”

Regardless, people can still shop off Amazon and pay with crypto — though not directly. Third-party websites like purse.io allow you to shop off Amazon’s extensive catalogue and pay with Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Litecoin and Zcash.

A lot of big companies have either started accepting cryptocurrencies as a payment method, while others have integrated the digital assets in some capacity.

For example, eBay allowed listings of NFTs on its platform as ‘Digital Collectibles,’ with the possibility that it will start accepting crypto as a payment method in the future. Twitter, on the other hand, allows its users to tip their favourite creators with Bitcoin, whereas Meta CEO Zuckerberg said last month that NFTs will arrive on Instagram ‘in the near term.’

The wireless earbuds which are normally available for $278.99 are currently listed for $249.99 on Amazon, adding up to a $29 discount. For reference, the same AirPods are listed on Apple’s website for $329.

The AirPods Pro feature IPX4 water, sweat and dust resistance along with improvements over the 2nd-generation AirPods, including impressive active noise-cancelling and better sound quality.

The wireless earbuds also offer up to four and a half hours of listening time with one charge and up to 24 hours with the charging case.

Apple’s AirPods Max are available for $90 off on Amazon

The AirPods Max, Apple’s top-of-the-line headphones, are currently $90 off on Amazon.

All colour variants of the headphones, which are normally available for $779 are currently listed for $689, with the exception of the ‘Pink’ colourway, which has seen a higher $170 price slash. The pink colourway is currently listed for $609, though it’s worth noting that Amazon doesn’t have a lot of those left in stock.
