Amazon adds new ‘Dialogue Boost’ option for select Amazon titles

Amazon now provides an alternative to traditional subtitles through a new Prime Video option known as Dialogue Boost for select Amazon originals.

The feature allows the user to increase the volume of on-screen dialogue, without increasing background noise or additional environment sounds or music. The feature is available in low and high boosts, depending on how much audio assistance is needed. Dialogue Boost can be found in the audio menu of compatible titles and can be turned on the same way subtitles would be.

The AI-based technology operates by isolating audio and intensifying speech in scenes that have been determined to have overwhelming background noise. The option is currently exclusive to Prime Video members and is only available on select Amazon-produced titles.

Users who are curious about certain titles’ compatibility with Dialogue Boost can check the details page for availability.

While the feature may seem practical for some, Amazon says the implementation will help those who are hard of hearing. The company plan to add Dialogue Boost to more titles later this year.

Amazon Prime Membership, which includes Prime Video, is available for $9.99/month.

Disney confirms it’s exploring an Amazon-esque ‘Prime’ membership program

Disney has confirmed a Wall Street Journal report that it is exploring an Amazon Prime-esque membership program.

According to the WSJ, this program would offer exclusive perks and discounts across Disney’s entire portfolio. It’s reportedly being referred to interally as “Disney Prime,” a nod to it being similar in concept to Amazon’s Prime membership.

While Disney didn’t reveal any specifics, it did confirm that it’s looking into reaching more consumers through such a program, stating that Disney is “more than a brand,” it’s a “lifestyle” to them.

“A membership program is just one of the exciting ideas that is being explored as we consider ways to marry the physical and digital worlds to create the next generation of great Disney storytelling and experiences,” the company told the WSJ.

Given how much Disney owns, it’s easy to see how such a program could apply to everything from theme parks and Disney+ subscriptions to movie theatres and cruises. Currently, Disney does offer annual memberships to its D23 fan club, which costs $99.99 USD (about $131 CAD) per year and offers exclusive membership, a D23 magazine subscription and discounted tickets to the company’s big biannual D23 Expo. That said, this is intended for hardcore Disney fans, while the WSJ says Disney Prime would target casual consumers.

It’s unclear if and when Disney Prime would release. For now, though, Disney is set to hold its next D23 event from September 9th to 11th, where it’s set to make announcements related to Marvel and Star Wars, among other reveals. September 8th also marks the second-annual Disney+ Day, at which time a variety of titles will hit the streaming service.

Amazon is making a dystopian clip show from Ring footage

Amazon’s Ring home security brand is working on a television show that takes footage from its cameras and turns it into a dystopian Funniest Home Videos-like clip show called Ring Nation.

Yes, you read that correctly. Ring, the same company that willingly hands over footage to law enforcement, is launching a TV show.

Deadline reports that Wanda Sykes has signed on to Host Ring Nation and that the production company behind Live P.D. is behind the project, alongside MGM Television and MGM’s Big Fish Entertainment, which, as you may have guessed, are owned by Amazon.

In a press release, Ring Nation is described as follows:

“‘Ring Nation’ is a half-hour, studio-based series that gives audiences a daily dose of life’s unpredictable, heartwarming and hilarious viral videos shared by people from their video doorbells, smart home cameras and more.”

Jaimie Siminoff, the TV show’s executive producer, describes Ring Nation as “bringing the new community together” and says that it offers a way for “friends and family” to spend time with one another. Heartwarming, right?

Ring Nation is set to premiere on September 26th. It’s unclear if the TV show will also stream on Amazon Prime.

Amazon debuts new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Amazon has released a brand new look at The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power ahead of its debut on September 2nd. The new teaser gives us more time to explore the diverse settings, characters, and an ominous threat looming over them.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In classic fashion to the IP, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power feature an ensemble cast.

The teaser trailer only runs for two minutes, 30-seconds. Yet, we see a few familiar characters. The bulk of the teaser features Galadriel, a royal elf. She speaks to Elrond with claims that the “enemy is still out there.” The series is expected to dive into the rise of Sauron and the creation of the rings.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been building a lot of anticipation. Amazon has reportedly spent an estimated $1 billion USD and is planning five seasons of the TV series. The company even won the rights in a $250 million payout. Adding in the development and production of it all, the series could be one of the most expensive shows produced.

The series stars Nazanin Boniadi, Benjamin Walker, Morfydd Clark, Peter Mullan, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, and Ismael Cruz Cordova. Its creative team includes Patrick McKay and John D. Payne.

Season one of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is comprised of eight episodes. The season unfolds weekly beginning on September 2nd and concludes October 21st, 2022.
