Amazon introduces 72-hour delay for user reviews to combat internet trolls

Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power has premiered with its first two episodes on the streaming service. While being received well by critics, Amazon has been facing an onslaught of internet trolls review bombing the series.

In an attempt to counteract reviews made by internet trolls, Amazon’s new delay on reviews is in place in order to evaluate each one. This way, Amazon hopes to weed out genuine and constructive reviews. Thus, the company can mitigate using those made by bots, trolls, and other malicious users.

This practice is reported to have launched quietly upon the premiere of Amazon Prime Video’s A League of Their Own. However, upon the two-episode premiere of Rings of Power, Amazon confirms the existence of the review delay.

Aside from Amazon Prime Video’s reviews, Ring of Power has faced negative reviews made by trolls. For example, Rotten Tomatoes shows a respectable 84% rating from critics, but a surprisingly low 39% from users. Delving into the content of the low reviews paints a picture of internet trolls intentionally providing negative reviews. Many are purely based on the show’s focus on a female protagonist and cast of colour.

This is far from the first series or film to face review bombings. While Rotten Tomatoes continues to suffer from negative reviews and trolls, Amazon’s new review policy appears to be working. A League of Their Own shows 80 percent of user ratings with five stars and 14 percent with one star, averaging 4.3 out of 5 stars on the platform. The first user reviews for Rings of Power should be rolling out soon on Prime Video.

Despite internet trolls attempting to bring down the party, Prime Video has revealed that 25 million global viewers tuned into the premiere of Rings of Power in the first 24 hours. Suffice to say that the show has started on a very good foot for the streaming service.

Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series will have a two-episode premiere

Amazon has announced that two episodes of its The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series will be available when the series premieres on Prime Video on September 1st at 6pm PT/9pm ET.

While many Prime Video series drop all of their episodes at once, the eight-episode first season of The Rings of Power will get one new episode every week. Amazon has committed more than $1 billion USD (about $1.28 billion CAD) to five seasons of the J.R.R. Tolkien-adapted fantasy series, which would make it the most expensive television production to date.

Clearly, then, Amazon is banking heavily on the series. However, it’s not related at all to Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings saga and is instead set thousands of years before the events of those films. Instead, it draws from Tolkien’s Appendices and covers all of the major events of Middle-earth’s Second Age, including the forging of the Rings of Power and the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron.

It’s worth noting that Amazon’s decision to debut two episodes of The Rings of Power on September 1st means that the show’s first season will wrap on October 14th, well before HBO’s House of the Dragon has its finale on October 23rd. The Game of Thrones prequel premieres on Crave in Canada on Sunday, August 21st.

A League of Their Own [Amazon Original]

In 1943, a group of women set out to form their own professional baseball team.

Inspired by Penny Marshall’s 1992 film of the same name (which was itself based on a true story), A League of Their Own was created by Will Graham (Mozart in the Jungle) and Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) and stars Jacobson, Chanté Adams (Roxanne Roxanne), D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place), Gbemisola Ikumelo (Famalam) and Vancouver’s Kelly McCormack (Killjoys). Toronto’s Patrick J. Adams (Suits) also has a recurring role.

Five Days at Memorial [Apple Original]

A New Orleans hospital deals with a major crisis after Hurricane Katrina ravages the city.

Based on Sheri Fink’s 2013 non-fiction book of the same name, Five Days at Memorial was adapted by John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) and Carlton Cuse (Lost) and stars Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), Cherry Jones (24), Cornelius Smith Jr. (Scandal) and Robert Pine (CHiPs).

It’s worth noting that the Five Days at Memorial was filmed in both Ontario and Louisiana.
