Amazon confirms Prime Day is July 12 in Canada

Amazon has confirmed that this year’s Prime Day will run from 3am ET on July 12th through to July 13th for Prime Members in Canada.

The company says that early Prime Day deals start June 21st and include discounts on products from Casper, Beats, iRobot, SharkNinja, Amazon Essentials, Levis, Adidas, Sony, Bose and more.

Last year’s Prime Day was cancelled amid the still-persistent COVID-19 pandemic.

At the time, the retailer said that the annual deal fest was cancelled so that the retailer could focus “on the health and safety” of its employees. Before outright cancelling Prime Day, Amazon delayed the event in May.

The e-commerce giant was heavily criticized during the height of the pandemic due to several COVID-19-related outbreaks at its Canadian distribution warehouses.

Amazon says it will also hold Prime Day in the U.S., Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, the U.K., Poland and Sweden.

An Amazon Prime membership costs $9.99 per month or $99 per year.

Amazon moving forward with air drone deliveries in the U.S.

Amazon is back at the drone drawing board with plans to launch its first drone delivery service in the United States.

The drone delivery service, which was initially announced back in 2013 by Amazon executive chairman, Jeff Bezos, will soon start operating in Lockeford, California.

Amazon says ‘sense-and-avoid’ features have been added to the drone to navigate around any obstacles in both air transit and when landing on the ground.

In 2019, Amazon showed off the first drone model at its re:MARS conference

As for Canada, there’s confirmation of the drone service making its way here, though the e-commerce giant has been testing using drones for delivery here dating back to 2015. Drone Delivery Canada has also been working in the drone delivery space for several years.

Amazon is still awaiting permission from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to launch the service.

Reduced COVID restrictions aren’t tearing Canadians away from the internet: poll

A new poll reveals Canadians are spending a lot of time on the internet even as pandemic restrictions ease across the country.

The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) outlines the details in Canada’s Internet Factbook, an annual report that profiles internet trends in Canada.

More than half of respondents (54 percent) spend more than five hours every day on the internet in 2022, up from 44 percent reported in 2020. Internet access is so crucial that 72 percent of internet users say they would be unlikely to buy a home without access to high-speed internet.

56 percent of respondents reported having unlimited data included in their home’s internet package in 2022, increasing from 26 percent reported in 2016. British Columbia and Alberta residents are the least likely to have the data option included in their home internet package.

Streaming

Of the hours Canadians spend on the internet every day, a large proportion is spent streaming content. 73 percent of respondents spend at least an hour every day streaming online, and nearly 43 percent spend an hour listening to music or radio online.

57 percent of respondents say they occasionally seek out Canadian content, with residents from Quebec being the most likely to do so.

Netflix remains the most popular online subscription provider, representing 61 percent of respondents, an increase from the 60 percent reported in 2021.

Amazon Prime continues to gain ground with Canadians, with 40 percent of respondents saying they have the service, up from 37 percent last year. Disney plus also saw significant growth, with 23 percent of respondents using the service in 2022, up from 17 percent in 2021.

Despite the growth in streaming services, users still seek out pirated content.

11 percent of respondents say they intentionally access pirated content, with the highest number of respondents coming from Nova Scotia. The poll shows cost, convenience and lack of availability as the top reasons for doing so.

According to the FactBook, a total of two thousand Canadian internet users (18+) were surveyed via an online panel in March 2022

Amazon Music for Prime members will be a little more expensive starting May 5

Amazon is set to increase the cost of its Music streaming service in Canada for Prime members, and the changes go into effect on May 5th.

Revealed in an updated FAQ page, Amazon says it is increasing the Amazon Music subscription cost to be able to bring its users more “content and features.”

The Amazon Music single-device plan is changing from $3.99 to $4.99 per month while the Amazon Music Unlimited individual plan is changing from $7.99 to $8.99 per month, or from $79 to $89 annually.

The Amazon Music single-device plan gives you access to Amazon Music Unlimited on one eligible Echo or Fire TV device, whereas the Unlimited individual plan allows you to listen to Amazon Music Unlimited on all your compatible devices, though one device at a time.

Any bills after May 5th will show the updated pricing. If you’re on a trial or promotional offer, you’ll get the lower rate for the rest of your trial or promotional offer time.

It’s worth noting that Amazon Prime Music, the company’s version of the music streaming service with fewer features and a smaller catalogue of two million songs, is still included for free with a Prime membership.
