Lobbying group backed by Apple, Google pushes for weaker U.S. privacy laws

A lobbying group backed by tech companies including Apple, Google, Meta (Facebook), and Amazon has reportedly backed weaker privacy legislation in the U.S.

According to Axios (via 9to5Mac), tech lobbying group State Privacy and Security Coalition (SPSC) promoted an upcoming state privacy law in Utah as the model that other U.S. states should adopt. However, critics have called Utah’s legislation too weak.

Specifically, Axios reported that consumer groups said the Utah bill wasn’t clear about how much control consumers would have over whether their information was used for targeted advertising. Moreover, the groups said the bill’s enforcement mechanism is weak.

Utah lawmakers considered and passed a state privacy bill in under two weeks. The bill is currently awaiting the governor’s signature. Utah is set to become the fourth state with a privacy law, joining Colorado, Virginia, and California. 9to5 notes that California’s law is more along the lines of Europe’s GDPR.

States have begun stepping up to introduce privacy laws and regulations while the federal government’s attempts to do the same languish in Congress. However, there’s an incentive for a single, federal law over multiple state laws since it’s easier for tech companies to comply with one law instead of 50 individual laws. Moreover, one effective law is easier for people to understand.

Axios says that Iowa is considering a similar bill to Utah, and other states are also weighing their own privacy bills. Although the SPSC told Axios it’s trying to help align state privacy laws in the absence of federal law, it’s concerning that the lobbying group has chosen to promote alignment around weaker regulations.

Also concerning is Apple’s involvement, given the company’s strong messaging about its privacy commitments — commitments that may not actually help consumers that much.

Although U.S. state and federal regulation won’t apply to Canadians, it’s important to follow how the U.S. approaches privacy legislation as it could become a blueprint for other countries. On that note, Canada is in the process of updating some of its own tech legislation, including Bill C-10 and C-11. However, critics say C-11 doesn’t go far enough in curtailing tech companies’ ability to gather data on Canadians.

Quebec version of LOL: Last One Laughing to hit Prime Video this year

Amazon has confirmed that a Quebec-focused take on its LOL: Last One Laughing Canada series called LOL: Qui Rira Le Dernier will hit Prime Video later this year.

The original series, itself an offshoot of the international LOL: Last One Laughing comedy format, pits Canadian comedians like Colin Mochrie, Dave Foley and Andrew Phung against one another to see who can keep a straight face the longest.

That format will be retained for LOL: Qui Rira Le Dernier, which will be filmed in Montreal and feature an all-French cast. Stand-up comedian and actor Patrick Huard (Bon Cop, Bad Cop) is confirmed to host, although a cast has not yet been revealed.

In addition to the two LOL shows, Amazon is also developing a revival of Kids in the Hall, the Canadian sketch comedy series featuring Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson. The show is set to hit Prime Video sometime this year.

Amazon removes $25 minimum requirement for one-day shipping on tons of items

Amazon Canada has announced that it has removed the $25 minimum purchase required to make one-day deliveries in Canada.

This isn’t available for all products, but the e-commerce giant says the restriction has been removed on “millions of items.”

Look for the “Get it by Tomorrow” check box in the filter menu on desktop or the Amazon app to find these items. To make sure you get an item within the one-day window, check the ‘order within’ countdown timer on the details page.

Some postal codes in Canada aren’t eligible for one-day shopping. You can check to see if your postal code fits the bill here.

Amazon Prime costs $79 per year with a 30-day trial period. The trial isn’t available for those in Quebec.

Amazon, Nike considering bid for Peloton: report

Amazon and Nike are both reportedly considering bids to acquire exercise equipment company Peloton.

According to a report from Reuters, Amazon is exploring an offer for Peloton and consulting with advisers about whether and how to proceed. Reuters also cited a Financial Times report that said Nike was evaluating a bid for Peloton, noting that the considerations were preliminary and Nike hadn’t held talks with Peloton.

Meanwhile, Peleton reportedly hasn’t decided whether it will explore a sale, although Reuters says activist investor Blackwells Capital urged the company’s board to put Peloton up for sale. Blackwells also called for the removal of CEO John Foley, accusing him of misleading investors and criticizing him for hiring his wife as a key executive, among other issues.

The rumours swirling around a Peloton sale stem from the company’s steep drop in stock price following a pandemic-driven boom in sales and a subsequent collapse when lockdowns lifted and gyms began to re-open. Previous reports indicated Peloton temporarily halted production of its fitness products due to a drop in consumer demand. Insider previously reported Peloton planned to lay off 41 percent of its staff in sales and marketing departments.

Amazon declined to provide comment to Reuters about the Peloton report, while Nike and Peloton did not immediately respond to requests from the publication.

Other reports indicated that Apple could be poised to buy Peloton to bolster its own fitness aspirations. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who reliably covers Apple, wrote in a recent newsletter that buying Peloton “would be an unnecessary and pricey headache for Apple.”
