Lady Gaga fans crash website

With the release of Lady Gaga’s new album Born This Way yesterday (May 23), popular online retailer Amazon surprised fans by offering the entire MP3 album for only 99 cents, a full $11 cheaper than iTunes. The sale was such a staggering success that Gaga’s Little Monsters managed to crash Amazon’s servers by early afternoon.

"We’re currently experiencing very high volume. If you order today, you will get the full @ladygaga album for $.99. Thanks for your patience," the retailer wrote on Twitter, as frustrated customers took to writing angry reviews and complaining about stalled downloads through social networking sites.

The discount was in large part an effort to promote Amazon’s new Cloud Drive service, which allows users to store their digital music on company servers and access the songs remotely. The 99 cent album made customers eligible for an upgrade to the premium 20 gigabytes of storage, an increase from the free five GB offering.

With Google having already launched their own cloud music service, Music Beta, and rumors of Apple introducing one as well, it’s not yet known whether the promotion will keep customers on Amazon’s servers.

Susan Boyle Sets a New Record

After breaking a record for pulling in the most YouTube viewers with footage from her Britain’s Got Talent show audition, the Scottish singer has hit another milestone in the history of Amazon pre-orders and its affiliate sites.

Her disc I Dreamed a Dream, which is headed for music shelves and online music retailers on November 23, has bumped Mr. Children’s Supermarket Fantasy, a 2008 disc with record sales on Amazon Japan, off the top spot.

This time, even though Boyle is from Scotland, America’s Amazon, not the Amazon in England, has garnered the most presale orders for I Dreamed a Dream.

Steve Barnett, the Chairman of Columbia Records, stated, "One of the things that is so unique about Susan Boyle is her ability to touch people around the world. We’re excited that ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ holds the new record for global pre-orders and that Amazon’s customers have supported her album in this way."

New Rihanna Single Out Today

Today (October 20) at 11:23 am on the dot, Rihanna’s new single will be heard.

The song, which figures on her next album, has been kept in the utmost secrecy.

The album’s producer, Chris "Tricky" Stewart, admitted in an interview with Rap-Up that he didn’t even know if the song he co-wrote would end up being the first or second single off the album. But one thing is for sure, he knows that the song will be a big hit, and revealed that it’s upbeat and made for the clubs.

Like Rihanna’s hit song, Umbrella featuring Jay-Z, Stewart’s song will also feature a big-name rapper. Stewart was part of the wizardry behind Umbrella‘s success.

Rihanna’s new disc, slated for November 23, is expected to be a double album, judging by the presale on Amazon.

Tom Cruise Not Putting Pressure on Amazon

Tom Cruise has denied that he put pressure on Amazon to remove an anti-Scientology book from their catalogue, reports The Sun.

Five days after the publication of the book, The Complex, Cruise reportedly went to the Amazon headquarters in Seattle to present a sneak preview to his film Valkyrie.

A few days later, Amazon‘s British website no longer sold the book, claiming that a person in the book had been subject to defamation.

Amazon says that the British law gave the company no choice but to pull the book from its catalogue. The author of the book, John Duignan, stated, “I believe Tom Cruise influenced them.”
