Under the Banner of Heaven, starring Andrew Garfield, comes to Disney+ Canada on June 8

Disney has confirmed that its acclaimed drama series Under the Banner of Heaven will premiere on Disney+ Canada on June 8th.

The true crime series, which debuted on Hulu in the U.S. on April 28th, is based on Jon Krakauer’s 2003 non-fiction book of the same name. In Canada, it will come to Disney+’s Star banner, although it’s unclear whether the entire series will drop on June 8th — given that all seven episodes will be available on Hulu by that date — or if it will follow a weekly release schedule. MobileSyrup has reached out to Disney for clarification and will update this story once a response has been received.

Under the Banner of Heaven follows a police detective who finds his faith shaken when investigating the murder of a Mormon mother and her baby daughter, which appears to involve The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).

Notably, the series marks Andrew Garfield’s first lead role in a TV series, following a stint of acclaimed performances in films like The Social NetworkHacksaw Ridge and Tick, Tick…boom! Of course, the two-time Oscar nominee is also coming off last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which he made his highly anticipated return as a multiversal Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Sam Worthington (Avatar), Daisy Edgar-Jones (Fresh), Denise Gough (Too Close) and Wyatt Russell (Lodge 49) co-star. It’s also worth noting that Under the Banner of Heaven was filmed in Calgary.

Andrew Garfield’s gruelling shows

Andrew Garfield has compared starring in his Broadway play to a "sweat lodge".

The 34-year-old actor admitted working on ‘Angels in America’ – a two-part epic which has a total run time of close to eight hours – is exhausting and he has never had a "great show" because it takes so much out of him.

He admitted: "There’s something about the exhaustion. It’s like doing a sweat lodge. Because it’s seven-and-a-half hours, you never have a great show.

"We all come of at the end of a two-show day and go, ‘It was f**king great, and it was f***ing awful.’ "

But Andrew tries not to "feel sorry" for himself too much because he feels so "privileged" to be a part of the play, which examines AIDS and homosexuality in America in the 1980s.

He added in an interview with Variety: "But as soon as I start to feel sorry for myself that I’ve been given this duty of attempting to make sense of this play and give it to people, I immediately get knocked sideways.

"I go, ‘Shut the f**k up. This is such a privilege to honour the souls that didn’t make it through and to honour the souls that did."

And the British actor admitted he needs to do a lot of "decompression" after a performance in order to fully relax.

He said: "It’s only acting, after all, but if you’re doing your job properly, you’re convincing your body that it’s going through what the character is going through.

"There’s a lot of decompression needed. I watch stupid television, Netflix kind of stuff — although not necessarily stupid. I’ve been watching ‘The Good Place’, which is not stupid at all. It’s very smart that is always incredibly funny."

Andrew Garfield only takes hallucinogens in ‘safe’ place

Andrew Garfield will only take hallucinogens where he feels safe to have a "freak out."

The 34-year-old actor believes there’s a huge stigma surrounding drugs, which he finds laughable, and, although he smokes cannabis because it makes him feel "nice", he’s very selective about where he does the psychoactive agent – which can cause hallucinations, perceptual anomalies, and other changes in thoughts, emotion, and consciousness – because he wants to feel "free and safe" to express his inner mind.

Speaking to ES magazine, he said: "Drugs… The word has such a stigma.

"I can only really take substances if it’s a ritual. I mean, weed, I can smoke because it’s just nice. But with hallucinogens, I have to do it in a very conscious way in a place where I feel free and safe and can have a freak out if I want to. I want to be able to express my insights … I find it pretty overwhelming being in any social situation that involves more than five people, to be honest.

"But outside of my closest friends and family, the theatre world is the place where I feel I most belong. It’s the most welcoming community that I’ve ever experienced."

Meanwhile, the ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ star believes his battle with meningitis as a baby, which almost killed him, has had a knock-on effect on some of the decisions he makes in life because the complications children suffer leave an "imprint."

He said recently: "Something I can share which is interesting, although it may be a bit tenuous to some people reading this, is that soon after I was born I contracted a strand of meningitis called coxsackie, which is almost a funny word but not a funny experience apparently. It could have killed me, or meant that I had severe mental or physical disabilities for the rest of my life.

"Some people might not agree, but I believe that our birth story, what happens in the womb, when we come out, the environment we come into, whatever complications at birth leave an imprint on the child. So I do believe that there is some innate knowledge of that experience in me somewhere. Some people may scoff at that."

Andrew Garfield nearly died after contracting meningitis

Andrew Garfield contracted meningitis after he was born.

The 34-year-old actor is currently starring in Andy Serkis’ directorial debut ‘Breathe’ as Robert Cavendish – who was diagnosed with polio and left paralyzed by the illness – and when filming the movie he couldn’t help but think what his life would have been like if the illness had left him with disabilities.

Speaking to The I Paper, Garfield said: "Something I can share which is interesting, although it may be a bit tenuous to some people reading this, is that soon after I was born I contracted a strand of meningitis called coxsackie, which is almost a funny word but not a funny experience apparently. It could have killed me, or meant that I had severe mental or physical disabilities for the rest of my life. Some people might not agree, but I believe that our birth story, what happens in the womb, when we come out, the environment we come into, whatever complications at birth leave an imprint on the child. So I do believe that there is some innate knowledge of that experience in me somewhere. Some people may scoff at that."

The film stars Garfield as Robin who, despite being given only three months to live after being paralyzed from the neck down by polio at age 28, devoted his life to campaigning for disabled rights until he died at the age of 64.

‘Breathe’ also stars ‘The Crown’ actress Claire Foy as his wife Diana and it was produced by Robin’s real life son Jonathan Cavendish, who runs The Imaginarium Studios production company with Serkis.

Garfield also revealed he thinks "feelings are rather important" and they can be dangerous is not spoken about.

He said: "I think it’s so easy for us to fall back into what conventional wisdom tells us, which is not to feel or not to express your feelings or not to be award of your feelings, they are just feelings. Well, no, I think feelings are rather important, and if they aren’t expressed that’s when dangerous stuff occurs."

Tom Holland’s spidey sense wasn’t tinkling after surgery

Tom Holland mistook an ice pack for his phone.

The ‘Spider: Man Homecoming’ actor was left dazed and confused when he woke from anaesthetic after having a wisdom tooth removed, and his friend, Harrison Osterfield, and younger brother Sam Holland filmed his hilarious reaction.

The 21-year-old star appeared shaky and struggled to sit up before grabbing the ice, thinking it was his cell phone and ‘answered’ it.

He said: "You… You… Hello."

Although the actor plays Peter Parker, one of the smartest characters in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the comic books, Tom quipped he feels "1/4 less wise" after the routine operation.

He captioned the video: "Thanks lads for looking after me @hazosterfield @samholland1999! I feel 1/4 less wise haha (sic)"

Tom debuted as the webslinger in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and in 2017 he had his first standalone movie as Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ – which was helmed by Jon Watts – marks the first time Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have worked together on the fan favourite superhero after Marvel sold the rights in 1985 for $225,000.

Tom is the most recent actor to don the superhero suit, following in the footsteps of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, who have played the character in the past.

One of the webslinger’s key superpowers is his ‘spider-sense’, which allows him super-reflexes and to anticipate attacks, and in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, this special ability was absent but Watts admitted it could be something that can be developed in future films.

Tom is currently filming ‘Chaos Walking’ and is set to reprise his role as the webslinger in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.

Andrew Garfield searched for true self with mushrooms

Andrew Garfield took hallucinogenic mushrooms to find his "true self".

The ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ actor wanted to go "to the depths" and beyond the "hell of being a human" to find answers within himself.

He explained: He said: "[It was about] going to the depths, past what you call the first layer, which is ‘Everything’s great!’, to the second — the hell of being a human. Inadequacies. Jealousies. Terror. Fear. Paranoia. Self-loathing. The s**t.

"What’s underneath, the third layer, is the true self, and I’m interested in that, in what Cat Stevens talked about when he said, ‘The answer lies within, [so] why not take a look?’ "

Andrew also admitted he is "excited" about having children.

The 34-year-old actor – who has been single since splitting from Emma Stone two years ago – is looking forward to starting a family one day, but worries about the state of the world he’d be raising his kids in.

Asked about having children, he said: "[I am] excited about the idea [but I] can’t help but be aware of the world I would be bringing a human into… Obviously that’s ridiculous."

The ‘Breathe’ actor admitted he worries about the culture of fame, and blames the worship of people in the spotlight for America ending up with an "idiot celebrity" – former ‘Apprentice’ star Donald Trump – as president.

He told the Sunday Times Culture magazine: "Look who’s in the White House. It’s an idiot celebrity, and we enabled that.

"It’s not just the people who voted for him, it’s the whole culture.

"We started worshipping things that are empty and false, and, you know, here we are.

"It’s not sneery. I have total understanding, but I wish we could wake up to the fact we’re being brainwashed."

Emma Stone has ‘never stopped caring’ for Andrew Garfield

Emma Stone has "never stopped caring" for Andrew Garfield.

The 28-year-old actress ended her romance with the 34-year-old actor in 2015 after four years of dating, and the pair have reportedly always had a soft spot for one another and have not got over their break up.

A source told PEOPLE: "They never stopped caring about each other. Even when they split, Emma and Andrew had great love and respect for each other."

And it is believed that despite years of being apart the ‘La La Land’ star and Andrew still share "romantic" feelings for each other.

Another source said: "The feeling between them is still romantic."

This news comes after Emma and the ‘The Hacksaw Ridge’ star were spotted getting close at a recent event and even reportedly left together.

An insider previously said: "She was in the audience watching the show. She left backstage with him."

And the couple have not been bitter towards one another after the split and both support one another with their careers.

A source previously said: "They care about each other and encourage the other’s career. They’re great friends."

It has also been reported that the pair have spent an increasingly large amount of time with one another as Emma is believed to have made "several" trips to see Andrew’s performance in London production ‘Angels In America’.

Another source explained: "Andrew’s feelings for Emma never softened and now they are growing close once again. She has seen the show several times and always goes backstage afterwards to see him. They have even been sneaking out of the back door holding hands. "

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield dating again?

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield are reportedly rekindling their romance.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ co-stars formed a relationship whilst on the set of the movie and enjoyed an on/off romance for four years before their 2015 split, and it seems as though a reunion could be on the cards as Emma has reportedly made "several" trips to see Andrew’s performance in London production ‘Angels In America’.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Andrew’s feelings for Emma never softened and now they are growing close once again. She has seen the show several times and always goes backstage afterwards to see him. They have even been sneaking out of the back door holding hands. "

Emma spent some time in the UK earlier in the year shooting her new film ‘The Favourite’, but made a further trip to London when they have reconnected. There is a lot of history between them but they are both so busy. At the moment they are just seeing what happens."

It’s not the first time the 28-year-old actress and her former beau, 33, have been thought to be reconnecting either, as they were spotted cuddling and holding hands at the 70th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) at Grosvenor House in London earlier this year.

A source said at the time: "As soon as Andrew finished his meal he made a beeline for her and gave her a huge hug. They chatted and laughed for at least half an hour. They looked very animated and happy to be together."

Although they ended their relationship some time ago, Andrew has made no secret of the fact that he still holds a candle for the ‘La La Land’ star, as he previously admitted that he’d choose her out of anyone else in the world to be stranded on a desert island with.

Asked who he’d choose to have with him if he was dropped on an island, he said: "Emma Stone. I love Emma. She’s all right. She can come."

Emma has also previously gushed over her former flame, and admitted she’s been having a tough time since their romance ended.

She said: "He’s someone I still love very much. It’s been interesting [since we split]. It’s been a good year. And sad. Pros and cons."

Tom Holland dating Zendaya

Tom Holland and Zendaya are dating.

The ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ co-stars reportedly fell for one another while making the movie, and though they have been trying to keep their romance out of the spotlight, insiders claim they have been spending a lot of time together.

A source told People magazine: "They started seeing each other while they were filming ‘Spider-Man’.

"They’ve been super careful to keep it private and out of the public eye but they’ve gone on vacations with each other and try and spend as much time as possible with one another."

The 21-year-old actor and the 20-year-old actress "challenge" one another but they also have a lot of fun and are always "joking around" together.

The source said: "They’re both really ambitious and they challenge each other — but, most importantly, they make each other crack up. They seem to have a really similar sense of humour and love joking around together. They have great banter back and forth."

Tom previously described Zendaya as his "best friend" and praised her for helping him navigate fame.

He said: "We are like the best of friends. She’s so great and amazing.

"I’m a little worried [about dealing with fame … but] Zendaya is super famous and she’s been through this and I just call her up and say, ‘How do I manage being famous?’ I’m very glad I have a friend like her."

The pair wouldn’t be the first ‘Spider-Man’ co-stars to enjoy an off-screen romance.

Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire embarked on a relationship while shooting ‘Spider-Man’ in 2002, but had split before filming the third installment in 2007.

And ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ co-stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone enjoyed a three-year romance until 2015.
