Andrew Garfield: I was bullied at school

Andrew Garfield is ”thankful” he was bullied at school.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ actor had a tough time growing up and started to read comic books when he was picked on as a schoolboy in Surrey, South East England.

He told the Daily Mail newspaper: ”I like to say I was thankful to my school bully, because without him, I wouldn’t be in this position now.

”I thought that [being sensitive] was a weakness, but I realize now those sensitivities can be real strength. Today I celebrate my sensitivities.”

The 30-year-old star, who is dating co-star Emma Stone, claims he was a ”skinny, sensitive kid” at school and he will never forget the experience of being bullied.

He said: ”[It was] a defining experience you never forget. I have not forgotten who bullied me, but I’m not going to name and shame them.

”I know now that it goes on everywhere, and I also have more understanding of what makes a bully. They’ve been bullied before.”

Andrew realizes today’s school children also have to deal with cyber-bullying and he ”hopes parents realize what their children have access to” on the internet.

Despite his success with the comic films, the actor also revealed he’s still not often spotted by people.

He added: ”I’m not recognized much in life, which I appreciate in this age where we’re so fame-obsessed. It’s gone bonkers.”

The couple – who met on the set of ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ and are both set to reprise their roles in the soon to be filmed sequel – are reportedly eager to focus on this careers and are trying to take their relationship slowly despite being more loved up than ever.

A source close to the 23-year-old actress told USMagazine.com: "There’s no rush to get engaged. They are both young and ambitious."

The ‘Easy A’ star was spotted enjoying several dates with her 29-year-old British boyfriend of more than a year in Los Angeles recently. They attended a Cirque du Soleil performance on October 16 and also caught a screening of ‘Paranormal Activity 4’ together on October 21.

An insider said: "They just love spending time together. They are absolutely adorable together. They both seem to have their heads on straight . . . They are the most normal couple I have seen."

For a long time the couple refused to confirm their relationship in a bid to maintain some privacy.

Emma previously said: "There’s such a great sense of comfort in knowing that the only thing you have control over is what you say. People can say and do all they want. If it never comes out of your own mouth, you still get to keep that semblance of what is sacred to you."

Earlier this year ‘The Help’ star revealed she once "threw up" and "crawled" on the floor when she was left heartbroken a few years ago.

She said: "I was crawling on the floor. I remember throwing up. I remember being on the floor – I have never felt anything quite like that. It was so visceral. It’s like someone has killed you and you have to live through it and watch it happen. It was awful."

Andrew Garfield: Spider-Man’s like any job

Andrew Garfield thinks landing the role of Spider-Man is like "any other acting job".

The star who shot to fame in ‘The Social Network’ revealed that ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ wasn’t his dream job after all.

He told the Radio Times magazine: "To achieve what you set out to achieve and realise it’s not what you want, it’s disappointing.

"This role had been something I’d always, always wanted to do. Then you realise it’s like any other acting job."

He continued to explain that he probably never be entirely happy as far as his career is concerned.

He added: "Some days it’s great, others you feel lost. And I’d always felt that if I got certain roles then I’d be set for life, emotionally, professionally. It would be Utopia.

"But you never get to Utopia. The dream has become reality."

Andrew said that producers now handed him roles as a short-cut to getting their movies made.

He joked: "It seems flattering but it isn’t. It’s like: ‘Are you kidding me? I can’t actually play a 50-year-old black, male prostitute."

"I wasn’t offered that… but it’s scary, being treated so nicely. Maybe it’s seductive if you believe in it. I don’t, I see it for what it is."

The actor, who was bullied at primary school, said that playing 17-year-old high school geek Peter Parker "wasn’t actually much of a stretch".

He explained: "It’s a horrible time of your life. But I still feel like I’m in that chapter. I’m unsure, insecure, awkward in my body."

Andrew Garfield faked mother death

Andrew Garfield once pretended his mother had died to stop himself being mugged.

The ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ star was "desperate" to avoid being robbed in the street as a student, and his tactic worked because his would-be attacker began comforting him instead.

He said: "I was in London, going to my girlfriend’s, and this guy caught me and told me to empty my pockets and I was so desperate I lied and said, ‘Listen, I’ve just come from my mother’s funeral.’

"It was an awful thing to say, but it worked and made him see me, and he sat on the steps with me for 10 minutes instead, comforting me."

However, the actor admits he has never told his mother about his lie and thinks she would be "heartbroken" if she found out.

He added: "I’ve never told my mum about that and it might really upset her. She’d be heartbroken"

Andrew was bullied at school and still doesn’t understand why he was singled out for such a long period.

He told GQ magazine: "I was bullied because I was very confused when I first went to school and there was a kid who was just mean and I didn’t understand it, and right into my teenage years when I was mugged on the street, or when I was 17,18 and in drama school and wouldn’t be able to do anything because there’d be three or four of them and they’d take my wallet, and I’m come home feeling so disempowered and so angry."

New Spider-Man villain cast

You know you’ve truly arrived when you’re cast as the villain in a big-budget action flick. Welsh actor Rhys Ifans, 43, was confirmed as the webbed crimefighter’s latest nemesis in the next Spider-Man flick.

Although it was rumoured that Philip Seymour Hoffman might play the part, it was finally confirmed that Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, Good Morning England) was chosen to play the villain in the next film in the franchise Spider-Man. Ifans first came to the spotlight playing the slovenly roommate, Spike, in Notting Hill, where he supposedly prepared for the role by not washing or brushing his teeth.

"We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans. After seeing his performance in our upcoming film ‘Anonymous,’ we’re in awe of his talent and think he’s the perfect choice to take on this role,” said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures.

The filmmakers prefer to not reveal which character Ifans will be playing in the forthcoming film.

It was announced last week that Emma Stone (Superbad, Zombieland) had signed on to play Gwen Stacy, along with Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) who will play Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man. The film retraces the early years of the character as he deals with teenage angst and the emergence of his superpowers.

Marc Webb will be directing the 3-D film due in theatres July 3, 2012 in 3D. Production will begin in December.

As for Rhys Ifans, his latest role is Xenophilius Lovegood, father of Luna Lovegood and editor of the Quibbler, in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 on November 19.
