Cisco now allows Webex users to move virtual meetings between devices

Webex users can now keep their virtual meetings active in various settings and without interruptions.

The video conference tool by Cisco now has Move to Mobile, which allows people to move their Webex calls from desktop to iPhone to Apple CarPlay.

Cisco directly built the feature into Webex Meetings. A QR code is generated when using it through the desktop that transfers a meeting to the user’s iPhone when scanned. Connecting the device to CarPlay moves it to a vehicle.

Users can also view upcoming meetings and join them via audio through CarPlay, a feature only available through Webex. Once a user is at their final destination, the session can continue over the phone and further connected to a conference room if needed.

The feature is also available for Android users.

The news builds on promises the company has made regarding “next-gen office spaces.”

Cisco announced back in March it was working with car manufacturer Ford to run Webex in their new electric vehicles. It will feature a 15.5-inch screen, called SYNCA 4A, that uses HTML5 and will offer a connection to Webex online. An app will also become available on the device.

“The automotive industry is undergoing a massive digital transformation. Cisco has the potential to help our customers embrace technology and fundamentally change the driving experience,” Chuck Robbins, Cisco’s chair and CEO, said.

Google Maps now offers an air quality feature

If you like to run, hike, or bike to get some fresh air, Google Maps’ new ‘Air Quality Index (AQI)’ layer might appeal to you.

Google Maps’ ‘Air Quality Index ‘ (AQI) overlay utilizes data collected from agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the U.S. to calculate air quality information. The feature is currently only available in the U.S., but it will likely make its way to Canada soon.

MobileSyrup has reached out to Google for more information.

PurpleAir will also offer a low-cost sensor network that detects conditions within hyper-local areas that appear on Google Maps. Air quality information from PurpleAir can be accessed on Nest smart displays and speakers.

Following the platform’s new ‘Air Quality Index’ feature, Google Maps also now offers a wildfire layer within the app to help users avoid areas that are at risk of or are experiencing wildfires. This feature was developed in partnership with the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC).

In other Maps-related news, Google recently added an eco-friendly routing feature in Canada that aims to help drivers find the most sustainable route.

Google Maps is available for free on Android and iOS.

Huawei announces new inventions as part of its ‘Top Ten Inventions’ awards

Huawei has announced several inventions as part of its biennial “Top Ten Inventions” awards at its Shenzhen headquarters.

According to a press release from the company, the award recognizes inventions that could create new series of products and become important commercial features for devices already on the market or generate considerable value for the company and industry.

Huawei won the award for inventions such as “an adder neural network that significantly reduces power consumption” and an “optical iris that provides a unique identifier for optical fibres.” The optical iris is designed to help carriers manage their network resources, therefore, cutting time and costs with broadband deployment.

Huawei now owns the patents for these two technologies, which it believes are critical to the tech ecosystem.

By the end of 2021, Huawei held more than 110,000 active patents across over 45,000 patent families. It has more patents than any other Chinese company and has filed the most patent applications with the Euopean Union (EU) Patent Office, and is fifth on the list for the United States Patent Office.

“In the past five years, more than two billion smartphones have been licensed to Huawei’s 4G/5G patents. And for cars, about eight million connected vehicles licensed to Huawei patents are being delivered to the consumers every year,” said Alan Fan, head of Huawei’s IPR department, in a statement. Additionally, Fan noted that Huawei’s patents have seen wide recognition across the industry, especially in cellular technology, Wi-Fi and audio/video codecs.

The company is also discussing joint licensing programs for 5G patents.

It’s worth noting that Canada banned Huawei and ZTE from its 5G network, so its patents can’t be used here.

And though Huawei has been blocked from U.S. technologies like Google’s Android operating system, phones with Android 13 will use a Read-Only File System (EROFS) created by Huawei engineer Xiang Gao.

Huawei says that it invests 10 percent of its sales revenue into research and development every year.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 rumoured to sport 1TB of storage

It looks like Samsung’s Fold 4 is getting a storage bump this year.

Though the foldable smartphone’s release is still a few months out, SamMobile has learned that there will be one variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 that will sport 1TB of internal storage. This is a substantial storage jump as the Fold 3 topped out at 512GB of storage.

Now that Samsung has ditched the Note series, it seems that more devices will offer the 1TB internal storage variant. For example, Samsung’s S22 Ultra also featured 1TB variant.

SamMobile believes that Samsung will also offer the Fold 4 in 256GB and 512GB variants, similar to the Fold 3.

1TB of storage will undoubtedly cost a lot, but this will be one of the only choices for those who want more storage as the Fold 4 will likely lack a microSD card slot. That said, you can always upload your photos, videos and more to the cloud.

Samsung will likely launch the Galaxy Fold 4 at an Unpacked event sometime this August or September.

This isn’t a lot to go off of, but previous details had led us to believe that the Nothing Phone (1) would release on July 21st. However, this was just a leak and the only information we had from Pei was that the phone was slated for a “summer release date.”

So far, all we know for sure about the Nothing Phone (1) is it will sport wireless charging, a transparent back, no chin, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and a recycled aluminum frame.
