Lego Star Wars Castaways is Lego Destiny on-the-go

I’ll admit that I’ve slept on Apple Arcade hit Lego Star Wars Castaways, but now that I’m playing it, I can’t put it down. The game’s story isn’t quite as engaging as the classic Traveller’s Tales Lego games, but it might be more fun.

Released in late 2021, the only way to access this game is to pay $5.99 for Apple Arcade, which is likely why I haven’t played it until now. As a kid, I devoured genuine Star Wars Lego sets and games, so anything with this branding combo speaks to me.

Castaways centres around a character that crashes on a tropical Lego Star Wars planet. You create a Lego Minifig and begin talking to locals. The story unfolds a bit from there, but most of the game is played from this expansive tropical hub world. There’s lots to do at first; however, over time, it leaves a lot to be desired.

That said, everything in this game is made out of Lego and looks astounding. When the title’s creative director, Jacques Durand, told me he did it for “the love of the brick,” he wasn’t lying. Seriously, this is the game’s real draw to any Lego nerd. The pure creativity of how Gameloft Montreal has developed this engine and constructed the world out of virtual lego pieces is astonishing. Beyond that, the lighting and detail in Lego Star Wars Castaways push what to expect from mobile games on modern devices.

Once you’ve finished exploring the island, the game revolves around visiting three different ‘Holosimulation stations’ that take you on different adventures. The first lets you go on small/medium-sized quests through dungeons themed after Star Wars locales. You partake in these on foot and use your skills and weapons to destroy enemies and corruption nodes. There are six different locales to explore in this mode.

The following simulation is for vehicle-based missions, and the final sim is for PvP combat/horde mode. There are three locations to explore and seven in the combat realm.

These simulations are fun. I’ve enjoyed the standard adventures the most, but my girlfriend, Alex, who I’ve been playing with, liked the flying missions a little more. Like the hub world, everything is made of Lego and the large areas you explore look great but only offer some replayability. They get a little stale after a few days of playing, however.

Still, being forced to replay levels hasn’t deterred me from pulling this game out of my pocket at least once a day.

Since Lego Star Wars Castaways is so pocketable, I can start a game and rip through a dungeon or see what new items are in the store anywhere, and that’s hooked me. It’s almost like a bite-sized Destiny, but it’s Lego combat instead of tight shooter controls. On top of that, since the game is an Apple Arcade title, I can also play it on Mac, iPad and Apple TV.

The combat is pretty fun, too, and the four classes built into the game are surprisingly deep. So far, I’ve only unlocked the ‘Trooper’ and ‘Force adept,’ but there are also ‘Support’ and ‘Agent’ that come later.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

All classes are given different weapons and abilities. For instance, my Trooper has a three-shot-spray blaster and a grenade, while my Force adept class has a Quarterstaff and can Force Push enemies. Levelling this class up to four rewards you with a lightsaber, and level eight unlocks Force Lightning.

Overall, this is a compelling mobile title. While I wish it weren’t completely gated behind an Apple Arcade subscription, I’d say that it’s easily worth $10 (two months of subscription). Plus, you might find a few other games to play as well. However, anyone with even the smallest amount of Lego Star Wars passions will likely enjoy the love put into Lego Star Wars Castaways.

Apple Arcade adds Gris+ alongside content updates for The Oregon Trail and more

Today, Apple Arcade is adding award-winning Gris+ to the service. In addition, a slew of content updates is hitting a wide array of Apple Arcade titles.

Devolver Digital’s hit game Gris+ is making its way to Apple Arcade. Starting today, subscribers to the service can take part in the title that Apple describes as “serene and evocative.” Gris first launched on Switch, macOS, and PC in 2018 before arriving on iOS the following year. Gris is an artistic puzzle game with platforming aspects. The game revolves around a young girl and the way she sees the world in front of her.

The game has been critically acclaimed for its art direction and minimalism. Gris features nearly no text and a simple control scheme. Thus, it’s perfect for many players around the world no matter their spoken language. As with other ‘App Store Greats,’ the game is now dubbed Gris+ on the platform.

Alongside Gris+, Apple Arcade is rolling out a list of content updates. Here is what you can expect across the many titles:

  • The Oregon Trail: This latest update will continue to introduce players to intriguing and pivotal moments of history as they embark on new quests where they can encounter the ill-fated Donner Party or meet Mato Oyuhi and Thomas Fitzpatrick on their way to Horse Creek for the signing of an important treaty. This update also adds the ability to visit storytelling campsites and listen to tales of fearsome critters from folklore.
  • LEGO Brawls: Kicks off Brick-or-Treat, a two-week limited time Halloween-themed event featuring “spookified” versions of classic Brawls levels.
  • Kingdom Rush Vengeance TD+: A new excavation on the dwarven mines has opened an unknown path to an old forgotten land and now the primordial horrors are on the loose on Linirea. Get ready to fight on behalf of the Dark Lord and defeat hordes of ancient dwarves, dinosaurs and man-eating plants. This update includes new terrain, new enemies, new boss fights, and more.
  • What the Golf?: Introduces the sea-themed Maritime Day Event, which runs through October 9 and includes new unique levels, and an unlockable trophy and achievement.
  • Angry Birds Reloaded: Check out the Halloween-theme Episode Ham’O’Ween, which includes 45 new levels.
  • SP!NG: Adds a new chapter filled with 18 new levels and the new Rush mode, which is a collection of unique time attack levels.
  • Spire Blast: Try out the all-new world Cosmic Valley, 20 new levels, and the new Pointing Block gameplay mechanic, which creates a chain of destructive chaos.
  • Bleak Sword: Take on 10 new challenging levels in the Castle of Despair, face the evil maker of the Bleak Sword in an epic new boss battle, and encounter two new diabolical enemies — the Hunched Knight and the Bleak Sword maker’s fiendish tentacle demons.

Apple Arcade is available in Canada for $5.99 per month. Subscribers can also add it to their Apple One subscription and bundle it with Apple TV+ and Apple Music.

Tom Hanks wants to play trivia games with you on Apple Arcade

Tom Hanks is launching his first-ever video game exclusively on Apple Arcade.

Developed by the U.K.’s Blueline Studios, Hanx101 is a trivia game in which the Oscar-winning actor serves as narrator. Altogether, Hanx101 features some 58,000 questions covering a variety of topics, including science, technology, history, geography, art and food.

Hanx101 will launch on Apple Arcade on September 2nd. An Apple Arcade subscription costs $5.99 CAD/month.

While it might seem odd for Hanks to partner with Apple on his first game, Hanx101 marks the third collaboration between the actor and the tech giant. 2020’s Greyhound, a war film written by and starring Hanks, was released directly on Apple TV+ amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The following year, Hanks starred in the post-apocalyptic survival film Finch, which also premiered exclusively on Apple TV+.

Jetpack Joyride 2 coming exclusively to Apple Arcade later this month

More than a decade later, Jetpack Joyride is getting a sequel.

Launching on August 19th on Apple Arcade, Jetpack Joyride 2 will offer the same side-scrolling, endless runner action as its 2011 predecessor. This means you’ll be tapping the screen to rise and fall to avoid incoming obstacles and snag power-ups.

In Jetpack Joyride 2, you can also ride new vehicles beyond the titular jetpack, including a UFO and a mech suit. Developer Halfbrick is also promising a “story-driven experience” for the sequel, although it’s unclear exactly what that means.

It’s worth noting that Jetpack Joyride soft-launched in a few markets last year, including in Canada, although August 19th will mark its full, official release.

An Apple Arcade subscription costs $5.99 CAD/month.

This is what happens to games when they leave Apple Arcade

Since the launch of Apple’s gaming subscription service, I’ve been curious to see what happens to titles when they inevitably leave the platform.

Now, I finally have an answer — sort of.

As first reported by 9to5Mac, 15 titles are set to leave Apple Arcade in the near future. In an updated support document, Apple explains that titles leaving Arcade will still be playable for “at least two weeks” and that developers can then choose to make their game available in the App Store.

Below is a full excerpt from Apple’s support document:

“Games might sometimes leave Apple Arcade. If you download a game before it leaves Arcade, you can play the game for at least two weeks after. If you try to launch an Arcade game that is no longer playable, you receive a No Longer Available message,” the support document states. “After a game leaves Arcade, the game developer might choose to make their game available on the App Store. These games might vary from the Arcade version. If the developer makes their game available on the App Store and allows you to load your saved progress, you can pick up where you left off in the Arcade version.”

Similar to Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, it’s believed that Apple signed three-year deals with several of the developers that brought their titles to Apple Arcade back when the service launched. Many of these contracts appear to be ending, and it looks like Apple isn’t renewing all of them.

Some of the games set to leave the subscription service include Dead End Job, EarthNight, Explottens, Lifeslide and more. Though there are likely at least a few gems in this list, it looks like most of the games leaving Apple Arcade aren’t particularly notable.

Apple Arcade starts at $5.99/month in Canada.

New Apple Arcade arrivals for May include Goat Simulator and Warped Kart Racers

A shortlist of new games has been announced for Apple Arcade in May. Throughout the month, four additional titles are due to hit Apple’s gaming service.

The new list of games set for Apple Arcade includes Warped Kart Racers. This kart racer pits iconic characters from 20th Television animated series like Family Guy, American Dad, Solar Opposites, and King of the Hill. There are clear inspirations from Mario Kart and other racers alike.

This title is likely most notable as it features characters like Peter Griffin, Hank Hill, and more. Players have access to solo and multiplayer races across 16 various maps, all inspired by the fan-beloved series. Warped Kart Racers launches on Apple Arcade on May 20th.

Additional games in the lineup include BadLand Party an atmospheric platformer with multiplayer components. This title arrives on Apple Arcade on May 6th.

The cult classic Goat Simulator+ is also arriving on Apple Arcade on May 13th. Developed by Coffee Stain Publishing, players navigate open maps as a goat, completing puzzles and causing destruction along the way. Although the game has a ton of bugs, they add to the hilarious and absurd nature of the game. It’s now a cult hit on consoles and PC.

Finally, Pro Darts 2022+ debuts at the end of the month on May 27th. This title features traditional darts gameplay across a variety of 3D environments. It allows for custom matches with friends and league play as well.

Apple Arcade continuously adds new titles to its service. Most recently, Noodlecake Studios launched Moonshot – A Journey Home.

Apple Arcade is available in Canada for $5.99/month.
