Apple’s production footprint in India could expand if talks to bring iPad production to the country succeed.

Two sources close to India’s government told CNBC the plans aren’t official, but talks have been ongoing. Apple already assembles iPhone 14 devices in India.

The news comes as Apple considers its options to move some production outside of China, following tensions between the country and the U.S. Rising labour costs and recent protests triggered by China’s strict covid restrictions also play a role.

The protests led Apple to reduce iPhone 14 production last month, contributing to shipping delays.

But moving manufacturing to India isn’t a straightforward task. CNBC reports the country lacks people with the expertise to build iPads, and industry experts estimate growth to be slow.

“I think in five years, 35% [of iPhones] will be manufactured in India,” Gene Munster of Loop Ventures told CNBC. “I think Apple will add iPhone production to other countries outside of India and China in the next five years. Perhaps Vietnam, Malaysia and the USA.”

If you’re looking to order one of the new Pro iPhone 14 models, you’ll have to wait a little bit longer to get your hands on the device.

The iPhone 14 lineup preorders opened up on Friday, September 9th, with the devices (except the iPhone 14 Plus) slated to be available starting September 16th.

However, delivery estimates in both Canada and the U.S. are starting to slip into the second half of October.

Those who placed their orders within the first few minutes of the preorders going live are likely to receive their device on launch day. Soon enough, though, delivery estimates started slipping to October, and as of right now, the iPhone 14 Pro shows a delivery estimate of between October 12th and 19th and October 19th and 26th for the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The iPhone 14 still appears to be getting delivered around September 16th, whereas the iPhone 14 Plus shows October 7th as the estimated delivery date, the date the device was originally slated to launch.

Those looking to get their hands on the Pro devices a little sooner can try pre-ordering the device online and scheduling a pickup from an Apple Store. Check out the list of Apple Stores by province here. Additionally, you can also try heading to an Apple Store on launch day to purchase the device at the store, though they are expected to have limited stock as customers walk in to buy the new devices.

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus start at $1,099 and $1,249, respectively, whereas the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max start at $1,399 and $1,549, respectively.
