Thieves carve hole into Washington Apple Store, steal $500,000 worth of iPhones

A Washington Apple Store was robbed of around $500,000 USD (around $675,500 CAD) this past weekend. A duo of robbers exacted a heist that sounds very much inspired by a 1950’s cartoon.

As first reported by the Seattle outlet King 5 News, two thieves broke into an adjacent coffee shop at the Alderwood Mall as the Apple Store was closed for the evening. The thieves then went into the shop’s washroom, cut a hole into a wall and crawled into the Apple Store.

Once the thieves were able to infiltrate the Apple Store, the duo were able to steal a total of 436 iPhones. It’s estimated that the total loss of merchandise is nearly half a million dollars. Nothing was stolen from the coffee shop, however.

Seattle Coffee Gear manager Eric Marks spoke to King 5 News. In an interview, he says that due to the layout of both the coffee shop and the location of the Apple Store, he never thought they were connecting in such a way. “I would have never suspected we were adjacent to the ‌Apple Store‌, how it wraps around I mean,” Marks says. “So, someone really had to think it out and have access to the mall layout.”

CEO of Seattle Coffee Gear Mike Atkinson also posted a photo of the damaged bathroom on Twitter. From the photo, the thieves merely had to cut through drywall, remove the insulation and they were able to access the Apple Store.

Thankfully, the Apple Store was closed for the evening. Staff were not onsite at the time. Therefore, nobody was injured during the robbery. It’s said that authorities do have access to surveillance footage of the theft. However, it is not being released due to it being an active investigation. The thieves have yet to be apprehended.

Apple has yet to comment on the matter.

Apple’s sprawling Pacific Centre, Vancouver store opens next week

Apple has confirmed that its long-under-construction Pacific Centre store located in Vancouver will open on Friday, November 18th.

The tech giant recently acknowledged that the two-storey building inside the CF Pacific Centre is indeed a new Apple Store, despite it being common knowledge that a location was being built on the site.

Apple commissioned a massive 30-foot mural to celebrate the store opening, led by prominent Canadian designer Mooren (Mo) Bofill with contribution by acclaimed xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) weaver and artist Debra Sparrow, giving the location a unique look when compared to the company’s other stores. The mural also features several nods to recognizable Apple products, including the Apple Pencil, AirPods, Face ID and more.

At roughly 14,000 square feet, this is the largest Apple Store in the core Vancouver area.

Apple says that the location’s grand opening will feature live performances by Vancouver-based rapper and musician Boslen and a Q&A moderated by Apple Music radio host George Stroumboulopoulos, alongside free programming tied to art, music and photography.

Apple Store down ahead of ‘Far Out’ event

As usual, Apple’s online store is down ahead of the company’s ‘Far Out’ event slated for later today. Those who navigate to the Apple Store website will get a “Be right back” message that notes Apple is “making updates” to the store. It then offers a link to watch the event.

Apple’s ‘Far Out’ event will kick off at 1pm ET/10am PT, and the Apple Store is expected to return after the event wraps up (likely with whatever products Apple announces at the event on full display).

If you’ve somehow made it through the last few weeks without hearing anything about the ‘Far Out’ event, Apple is expected to unveil quite a few things. There’s the iPhone 14 line, including four models: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. There likely won’t be a 14 mini, and it’s expected only the Pro models will get the new A16 chip.

Apple will also probably unveil new Apple Watch models, most likely a Series 8 and a new Watch SE. Rumour has it there will be a Watch Pro as well. We could see new AirPods Pro, and possibly other devices (new iPad, HomePod, etc.) unveiled too. For a full rundown of expectations, check out our story here.

You can find out how to watch the ‘Far Out’ event here.

Apple’s Store no longer requires verification for education discounts

If you’re looking to get a slight discount on a new Apple product, you can now do so through the tech giant’s Apple Education program.

Previously, Apple used Unidays to verify that people were eligible students, but that limitation has been lifted. Thinking back, my partner bought an M1 MacBook Air last winter with the education discount and didn’t need to verify what school she was attending.

Other reports from U.S. publications like The Verge and MacRumors have also verified this shift in Apple’s policy. The only catch is it’s unclear how much longer Apple will keep the Eduction Store open to everyone. It’s possible now that news of Apple opening up its education program is widespread, the company will backpedal on the decision.

With all of this in mind, it’s important to note that Apple has locked down the Education Store with new rules that limit people from taking too much advantage of the discount. These rules limit shoppers to one desktop, Mac mini, laptop, two iPads and two accessories per year, per Apple account.

Apple shortens iPhone and iPad financing plan period to 6 months

Despite only just introducing its financing plans for the iPhone, iPad and Mac back in August, Apple has already made significant changes to how the program works alongside the reveal of its iPhone 13 series.

Instead of 12 or 24-month payment plans, bringing the cost of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, for example, down to $65.54 per month, now the only payment term option is six months.

This drastically increases the monthly cost and makes financing the iPhone 13 series far more pricey. For example, the iPhone 13 Pro costs $233.16 per month on a six-month repayment plan, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max costs $258 on a six-month repayment plan. Apple’s iPads, including the new iPad mini and entry-level iPad, are also only available on six-month payment plans.

On the Mac side of things, 12 monthly payments are still an option.

Paybright by Affirm remains the provider of Apple’s payment plans, so it’s unclear why the company opted for this change. It’s worth noting that previous monthly payments on a 24-month plan were more in line with what Canadian carriers typically charge to finance devices through plans.

All payment plans are available with zero percent APR “on approved credit for iPhone purchases over $99, and iPad and Mac purchases over $199,” according to the fine print. It’s likely that Apple’s zero percent APR option is only available for a “limited time.”
