3rd-Gen Apple TV 4K users report connection problems with Siri Remote

3rd-Gen Apple TV 4K owners are reporting connection issues with the Siri Remote, even when located in close proximity to the set-top box.

As reported in several Reddit threads and MacRumours‘ forum, the issue seems to stem from the Siri Remote’s inconsistent Bluetooth connection with the set-top box.

The only fix users have been able to find is by either re-pairing or restarting the Siri remote, or by unplugging and plugging the set-top box in again. Further, using the remote app on an iPhone, or controlling Apple TV with a TV remote via HDMI-CEC seems to be working as intended, which means the issue definitely stems from the Siri Remote’s Bluetooth capabilities.

It is currently unclear whether the problem is caused by a software bug or a hardware issue, but some users have reported that the issue began after updating to tvOS 16.2.

According to MacRumours, users have even gone through multiple Apple TV 4K replacement units to try and resolve the problem, with mixed results. Apple has not yet publicly acknowledged or addressed the issue, but is likely aware of it.

Apple TV 4K (2021) available at an all-time low price on Amazon

Apple’s 2021-released Apple TV 4K (32GB) is currently available for an all-time low price on Amazon, as spotted by RedFlagDeals user ‘pkamto.’

Amazon Canada has the device available for $159.96, while every other major retailer has it listed for $199.99 or above. Before today, the lowest Apple TV 4K (2021) had gone was $179.

It’s worth noting, however that Apple just released its new (2022) Apple TV 4K yesterday, November 2nd, which starts at $179 for the 64GB model and comes with an updated A15 Bionic processor. In comparison, the 2021 Apple TV 4K, the one on sale, runs on the A12 Bionic chipset.

Both models support 4K HDR at up to 60fps. Learn more about the new Apple TV 4K here.

Similar deals to the (2021) Apple TV 4K sale are expected to arrive as we approach Black Friday. However, if you can’t wait until then, $159.96 is a solid price to pay for something that launched for $229 last year.

Disney+ adds Dolby Atmos spatial audio to Apple TV 4K app

The Disney+ app on Apple TV 4K will now support spatial audio via Dolby Atmos, as reported by FlatPanelsHD.

The new feature comes as part of the Disney+ app update on tvOS 15 (update version 2.9.5) and allows you to watch movies and TV shows in spatial audio via Apple’s AirPods Pro, AirPods Max or the HomePod speaker.

Despite Dolby Atmos being present within the app, the Disney+ app was previously limited to 5.1 sound on the Apple TV 4K using Apple’s audio hardware.

The same update on Android TVs, on the other hand, seems to have broken Dolby Atmos. As reported by 9to5Google, Dolby Atmos has stopped working on certain Sony TVs, Nvidia Shield, Chromecast, TCL Android TVs, Hisense Android TVs, and other Android TV and Google TV devices after update version 2.9.1. The same was corroborated by Reddit users. It is unclear when a fix will be released. However, users have found that sideloading back to the Disney+ app’s 2.8.0 version seems to get rid of the issue.

Check out what’s new on Disney+ in August here. A regular Disney+ subscription costs $11.99/month in Canada; however, in an attempt to make its streaming service more attractive to non-subscribers, Disney has announced that it will introduce a cheaper ad-enabled subscription tier to Disney+. Read more about it here.
