Ten years after the events of the original Dexter series, Michael C. Hall returns as the eponymous serial killer as he abandons the quiet life he was leading for sinister purposes.

Original Dexter showrunner Cylde Phillips returns for New Blood, as does Jennifer Carpenter (Debra Morgan) and John Lithgow (Trinity Killer), while Julia Jones (The Mandalorian), Alano Miller (Sylvie’s Love) and Johnny Sequoyah (Believe) join the cast.

In the Heights

Based on Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes’ musical of the same name, In the Heights follows a New York City bodega owner who saves all of his money in the pursuit of a better life.

Outlaw Nat Love and his gang seek revenge against the ruthless crime boss Rufus Buck.

Based on real people from the 19th-century American West, The Harder They Fall was co-written and directed by Jeymes Samuel (“The Bullitts”) and features an ensemble cast that includes Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country), Idris Elba (Luther), Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), Regina King (Watchmen) and Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods).

After meeting on a dating app, a young woman travels to her crush’s hometown for Christmas, only to discover she’s been catfished.

Love Hard was directed by Hernán Jiménez (Elsewhere) and stars Toronto’s own Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley) and Darren Barnet (Never Have I Ever).

It’s also worth noting that the film was shot in Vancouver.

4K and 8K LG TV users can get three months of Apple TV+ for free

LG announced today that its Smart TV users in over eighty countries, including Canada, would be able to claim a free three-month subscription to Apple TV+.

Starting November 15th, owners of LG’s 2016 to 2021 4K and 8K TVs will be able to redeem the offer directly from the LG Content Store. It’s worth noting that this deal is exclusively available to new Apple TV+ subscribers. If you’ve already tried out the service, you won’t be eligible for the promotion, and you can claim only one free trial per qualified LG Smart TV and Apple ID.

Simply follow the on-screen instructions in the LG Content Store or click the Apple TV+ banner on the LG TV home menu to redeem the promotion.

Apple TV+ comes with a seven-day free trial, after which it costs $5.99CAD a month. Apple also offers a three-month free trial of the service when you buy a new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac.

Canada’s Eugene Levy to host travel series on Apple TV+

Canada’s own Eugene Levy is about to host his own show on Apple TV+.

The new unscripted series is a travel show called The Reluctant Traveler. The series will show Levy going around and checking out the world’s best hotels while exploring the people and places around them. It’s pretty funny considering Levy’s Schitt’s Creek character owned a motel.

“Self-confessedly not your average travel show host — he’s not usually adventurous or well-versed in globe-trotting — he’s agreed the time is right for him to broaden his horizons. Levy will be packing his suitcase with some trepidation but hoping his experiences might lead to a whole new chapter in his life — that’s as long as he doesn’t have to battle his motion sickness, and still gets dinner at 7,” Apple described the series.

Levy will be the executive producer alongside David Brindley. The series is being produced by ITV’s subsidiary, Twofour.

Crave has added two new films to its “Indigenous Stories Collection” — The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open and The Incredible 25th Year of Mitzi Bearclaw.

The former film is a drama about Áila, who helps another woman through her trauma after an assault by her boyfriend. The Incredible 25th Year of Mitzi Bearclaw, meanwhile, is a comedy about a 24-year-old Indigenous woman who moves back to her reserve to look after her sick mother.

HauntTV’s Halloween Countdown

From October 20th to 31st, HauntTV is offering a variety of Halloween-themed programming, including Haunted Hospitals, Evil Encounters, World’s Scariest Hauntings and a sneak peek at Hotel Paranormal, narrated by Ottawa’s own Dan Aykroyd (Ghostbusters).

HauntTV content can be streamed for free on The Roku Channel and Samsung TV Plus.

‘Foundation’ renewed for second season on Apple TV+

Apple has renewed its Foundation series for a second season on its Apple TV+ video streaming service.

While Apple doesn’t reveal specific viewership figures for its Apple TV+ content, the sci-fi series must be tracking well already, given that it only just premiered on September 24th.

Created by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy) and Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Foundation is based on Isaac Asimov’s eponymous novel series and stars Jared Harris (Mad Men), Lee Pace (The Hobbit trilogy) and Lou Llobel (Voyagers).

The series follows Dr. Hari Seldon (Harris) as he and a group of followers try to preserve the future of civilization while a long line of emperor clones (Pace) attempt to stop them.

A premiere date for Foundation‘s second season has not yet been announced.

Apple reportedly told a union that it had under 20 million TV+ subs in July

Apple TV+ reportedly had under 20 million subscribers in July, according to the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

While Apple has never publicly revealed TV+ subscriber details, the TV and movie workers union says it learned of this figure from Apple because it allowed the company to pay production crews lower than most streamers due to its comparatively lower subscriber count. For context, Netflix had 209 million subscribers and Disney+ had 116 million as of Q2 2021.

The IATSE is bringing this up because tens of thousands of its union members could walk off their job as part of a strike to increase wages. As CNBC notes, Apple paying its TV+ production crews discounted rates despite being the world’s most valuable publicly-traded company highlights some of the issues that the IATSE are speaking out against. CNBC reports that an Apple spokesperson declined to comment on TV+ subscribers but said the company’s rates are in line with leading streaming services.

Therefore, it’s unclear how the reported 20 million-odd subscriber count stacks up to Apple’s own internal projections for TV+. It’s also unknown how the release of notable programming like Ted Lasso Season 2 (July 23rd), The Morning Show Season 2 (September 17th) and Foundation (September 24th) may have contributed to Apple TV+ subscriber growth.

Apple releasing series premiere of ‘Foundation,’ next ‘Ted Lasso’ episode early

In a surprise move, Apple has confirmed that it plans to release the premiere of Foundation, the next episode of Ted Lasso and several TV shows, three hours early on September 23rd.

Usually, East Coast viewers need to wait until midnight on Friday to watch new episodes of Apple’s original content, but that won’t be the case this week. However, given that the premiere of Foundation is set to drop on the 23rd, the tech giant seems to have made an exception.

Apple’s tweet regarding the pushed-up release specifies that any new Apple TV+ episodes set to release September 24th will stream early, including The Morning Show, Mr. Corman, Truth Be Told, Ted Lasso and See. New episodes in all of the above TV shows will start streaming at 9pm eastern on Thursday, September 23rd (today).

Upcoming science fiction drama, Foundation, is based on Isaac Asimov’s book series that shares the same name. The David S. Goyer-produced show that follows a band of exiles trying to take down a galactic empire, is one of the tech giant’s most significant original content releases coming up this fall.

Apple TV+ costs $5.99 per month in Canada and is included in all Apple One subscription bundles.
