Apple ‘TV remote’ app returns to the App Store with iOS 16

Apple’s ‘TV Remote’ app is set to make a return alongside iOS 16, according to a recent tweet from MacRumors contributor Steve Moser.

Though Apple’s virtual Apple TV remote was available as an app, the tech giant ditched the dedicated app and removed it from the App Store back in October 2020. Since then, the app has been available directly through the iOS and iPadOS ‘Control Center.’

Now, it looks like, alongside a revamped, highly-customizable lock screen, the dedicated Apple TV Remote app is also making a return. As someone who constantly misplaced their physical Apple TV remote and who often forgets that I can swipe down from the top of my iPhone to access the built-in virtual remote, this is great news (I’m just so used to using the dedicated Apple TV remote app).

The first developer beta of iOS 16 is currently available, and a public beta will likely launch at some point next month.

The final version of iOS 16 will release this coming fall. For more on iOS 16, follow this link.

It looks like Apple’s Ted Lasso is ending with Season 3

Ted Lasso is likely coming to an end.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, writer and Roy Kent actor Brett Goldstein said the creative team is approaching the comedy series’ upcoming third season as its last.

“We are writing it like that,” he said. “It was planned as three. Spoiler alert: everyone dies.” It should be noted that Apple itself has not commented on the future of the series.

While the bit about everyone dying is clearly a joke, Goldstein’s broader point about the series coming to an end lines up with previous comments from Ted Lasso himself, Jason Sudeikis, who also co-created the series. In 2021, Sudeikis told Entertainment Weekly that the show was envisioned as a “three-season arc,” although he admitted at the time that he didn’t know what might come after that.

Since its debut in August 2020, Ted Lasso has become Apple TV+’s flagship original series. The show, which follows an American basketball coach who travels to England to coach a soccer team, has garnered rave reviews and numerous Emmy nominations for its blend of humour, performances and uplifting tones.

Production is currently underway on Season 3, which is set to premiere on Apple TV+ later this year.

Streaming in Canada on Prime Video, Apple TV+, Crave and Netflix [May 30-June 5]

Every week, MobileSyrup outlines some of the most notable movies and TV shows that recently hit Canadian streaming platforms.

Our ‘Streaming in Canada’ column typically focuses on new content from Amazon Prime Video, Crave and Netflix, but other services like Apple TV+ and Disney+ are mentioned when relevant. Premium video on demand (PVOD) platforms are also fair game as movies continue to come to digital early amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Finally, we’ll highlight shows or movies that are made by Canadian companies, involve notable Canadian cast or crew and/or are filmed in Canada.

Amazon Prime Video

The Boys (Season 3) [Amazon Original]

One year after the events of Season 2, Hughie, Butcher and The Boys work for the government until they learn about a potential superweapon that could take down the increasingly unhinged Homelander.

Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic series of the same name, The Boys was developed by Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and stars Karl Urban (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Jack Quaid (Vinyl), Antony Starr (Banshee), Erin Moriarty (Marvel’s Jessica Jones), Laz Alonso (Avatar), Tomer Capone (Hostages), Mississauga, Ontario’s Nathan Mitchell (iZombie) and Jensen Ackles (Supernatural). It’s worth noting the series was filmed in Toronto, while Vancouver’s Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad) served as producers.

Amazon Prime Video premiere date: June 3rd, 2022 (first three episodes, new episodes every Friday)
Genre: Superhero
Runtime: Eight episodes (around one hour each)

Stream The Boys here.

Note: I don’t usually include my own opinions on what’s featured in each Streaming in Canada column — mostly because there’s just too much to watch! But I have seen the first five episodes of The Boys Season 3, and I’m happy to say it’s just as good as ever. The first few episodes are perhaps a bit slower-paced than one might expect from the show, but it’s all in service of taking the time to get into the headspace of our characters amid the new status quo.

Of course, this means we see more of Butcher’s (Karl Urban) struggles to work with the government and Homelander’s (Antony Starr) ever-fragile mental state, and both remain fantastic in their respective roles. (Seriously — Homelander is one of the best characters in any superhero story ever.) But I was especially pleased to see Hughie (Jack Quaid) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) get satisfying and emotional beats. I’m also intrigued to see what Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy brings to the mix. All around, The Boys is as sharp as ever, and a must-watch even if you’re not normally a fan of superheroes. Oh, and you’ll never see Ant-Man the same way again.

An Amazon Prime Video subscription is included at no additional cost with an Amazon Prime membership, which costs $79/year.

The full list of movies and shows that hit Amazon Prime Video Canada last month can be found here. Meanwhile, a round-up of June’s new content can be found here.

Nomad case for Siri Remote includes AirTag pocket, adding the ability to track device

Nomad is releasing a Leather Cover for the 2021 Siri Remote. This cover includes a pocket designed for an AirTag, adding the ability for users to track the rather small remote.

In 2021, Apple launched the new Siri Remote for Apple TV. The new remote includes a revamped design but as many have pointed out, it lacks a U1 chip.

Nomad’s case for the 2021 Siri Remote effectively enables users to track the device in the event it’s lost in another room or is misplaced in the couch cushions. However, it does rely on the use of an AirTag and the Find My app. The official Nomad Leather Cover description reads:

“Leather Cover elevates the look and feel of your Siri Remote. Constructed with a hidden inner pocket for your AirTag, Leather Cover allows you to easily track your Remote using the Find My App.“

Nomad’s Leather Cover for Siri Remote is made of Horween leather, sourced from the U.S. It features a microfibre interior lining and a hidden AirTag Pocket. This allows for the discreet use of an AirTag.

Currently, the cover is available in an Ashland Brown colour. On its website, Nomad lists the Siri Remote cover for $39.95 USD (roughly $50.45 CAD).
