Apple Watch saves teen that slipped 150 feet into a valley

A 17-year-old hiker in India is crediting the Apple Watch for saving his life, after he fell 150 feet down a valley and broke both his ankles.

Smit Mehta, along with three of his friends, was out on a trek at a hill station in Western India near Mumbai on a rainy day. On his way back from the trip, due to the rainy conditions, Mehta slipped into the valley, and fell roughly 130-150 feet in.

Mehta suffered two broken ankles during the ordeal and quickly realized that he didn’t have his phone with him when he fell. However, Mehta was wearing his Apple Watch Series 7, and noticed that the watch was connected to a cellular network. “Soon, I saw that I was getting signal on the Watch and immediately called my parents and friends,” said Mehta in a statement given to Times of India. “I weighed 99kgs at the time of the fall and I am over 6 feet tall, so it wasn’t easy at all.”

Reportedly Mehta was the seventh accident on that hiking route on that particular day.

Mehta shared his location with his parents, and he was soon taken to a local hospital. Due to delayed medical attention, Mehta’s wounds were infected, and he had to be shifted to a bigger hospital, where he underwent surgery and is currently rehabilitating.

Mehta says that he had read similar stories of people around the globe that were lucky enough to have their Apple Watch on them when they got into sticky situations, like a kayaker from Sydney that was swept 4km out to sea, but was able to call for help with his Apple Watch.

Subsequently, Mehta wrote to Apple CEO Tim Cook to share his story, and to his surprise, Cook replied back on November 10th:

Smit,

I’m so glad you are on the road to recovery. It sounds like a terrible accident. Thanks so much for sharing your story with us.

I wish you a full and speedy recovery.

Best, Tim

watchOS 9 features QuickType Keyboard with the Apple Watch Series 7

On the surface, watchOS 9 seems like a relatively low-key update to Apple’s smartwatch operating system, but now that the dust has settled surrounding WWDC 2022’s keynote, more information about the OS is starting to appear.

As first reported by MacRumors, Twitter user Braham Shank uncovered that watchOS 9 features a QuickType keyboard with the Apple Watch Series 7.

This keyboard suggests words as the user types in an effort to predict what you might want to add next to your message. In the context of a smartwatch, this feature could be particularly useful when you’re trying to send a quick message.

QuickType first made its way to the iPhone alongside iOS 8 back in 2014. Other notable watchOS 9 features include expanded sleep monitoring, medication tracking and several new Watch Faces.

The first version of Apple’s developer beta for watchOS 9 is currently available. A public beta will follow in July and then the full version of the update is expected to drop this fall.

Apple Watch blood pressure tracking features reportedly delayed to 2024

Rumours regarding the Apple Watch featuring a blood-pressure monitoring feature have been swirling since before the wearable was even released, and it appears those eagerly anticipating the functionality will be forced to wait a little longer.

Several reports from last year indicated that blood-pressure monitoring could arrive alongside the Apple Watch Series 7 last fall, but those rumours didn’t turn out to be accurate. Now, a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests blood-pressure monitoring might not make its way to Apple’s wearable until 2024.

Bloomberg says that Apple is experiencing difficulties with the monitor’s accuracy. The report goes on to say that the Apple Watch won’t be capable of recording specific blood-pressure readings and that instead, will alert users about hypertension and suggest contacting their doctor.

Like blood-pressure tracking functionality, rumours surrounding blood sugar monitoring and the Apple Watch have been circulating for years. Gurman says that this feature is likely still several years away and that there’s currently no rumour regarding its target release date.

Apple’s upcoming watchOS 9 update is expected to feature refreshed older Watch Faces, expanded women’s health functionality, and a better low-power mode.

Apple’s Q1 2022 earnings indicate tech giant is moving past supply chain issues

Apple has posted record Q1 2022 sales that surpass Wall Street’s estimates surrounding the tech giant, indicating that it has worked through the supply-chain issues it suffered earlier this year.

The company’s overall sales grew 11 percent to $123.9 billion USD (roughly $157 billion CAD) in the first quarter. This number is well above the $119.1 billion USD analysts predicted.

Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that the worldwide chip shortage would cost the company $6 billion in sales leading into the important holiday shopping season. However, it seems the company was able to successfully navigate those issues as it launched the Apple Watch Series 7, the new MacBook Pro (2021) and the iPhone 13 series.

“This quarter’s record results were made possible by our most innovative lineup of products and services ever,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, in a press release. “We are gratified to see the response from customers around the world at a time when staying connected has never been more important. We are doing all we can to help build a better world — making progress toward our goal of becoming carbon neutral across our supply chain and products by 2030, and pushing forward with our work in education and racial equity and justice.”

Apple earned 71.6 billion USD (about $91 billion CAD) in revenue from the iPhone 13, an increase of 9.2 percent year-over-year despite being a relatively expected update over the iPhone 12 series. The iPad earned $7.25 billion (roughly $9.2 billion CAD), a 14 percent downturn year-over-year even though the sleek-looking iPad mini (2021) launched this quarter.

On the other hand, the company’s accessories division that includes the Apple Watch, Apple TV, AirPods, Beats and more, earned $15.7 billion (approximately $19.9 billion CAD), an increase of 13 percent year-over-year. This growth was led by the introduction of the Apple Watch Series 7 and the long-awaited 3rd-gen AirPods.

Services — a division Apple shifted its focus on for the last few years — experienced significant 24 percent year-over-year growth tied to App Store, Apple Arcade, Apple Music, Apple TV and iCloud subscriptions. Earlier this month the company revealed that over the course of 2021, the App Store generated $60 billion (roughly $76 billion CAD).

Finally, Apple’s Mac division earned $10.9 billion (about $13 billion CAD) in sales, 24 percent year-over-year growth. This increase was likely spurred by the launch of the well-received MacBook Pro (2021), a laptop that many (including myself) view as a return to form for the tech giant in the laptop space.

New Apple Watch Series 7 ad focuses on life-saving potential during emergencies

Apple has debuted a brand new one-minute-long ad that focuses on the Apple Watch Series 7 and its emergency call feature. While safety features of the Apple Watch have always been showcased, this ad is especially dark.

In the ad, we hear the conversations between 911 operators and three Apple Watch owners who are assumed to be facing death. One caller frantically explains they’ve been in a car accident and the vehicle is flipped and filling with water. The second was paddleboarding and the winds pushed them out to sea. Finally, the last fell 21 feet at their farm and broke their leg.

It’s explained that each one of them was alone and without direct help in the situation. All three called 911, explained their situation and were provided assistance. “With the help of their watch, Jason, Jim, and Amanda were rescued in minutes,” the Apple ad states in its conclusion. Although we only hear audio throughout the ad, it’s still a very grim, yet apt look at unexpected dangers that may arise and how wearable technology can have life-saving potential. That said, it doesn’t make listening to these assumedly real conversations any easier to hear.

Apple has always highlighted the safety features of the Apple Watch. They’ve become staples in the marketing. From its fall detection to heartbeat monitoring, the Apple Watch can provide many benefits. However, this is the first time Apple has used life or death as a direct marketing strategy.

The Apple Watch Series 7 can make emergency SOS calls when in a bind. However, it is mandatory that the wearable has a cellular connection or is near an iPhone or set up for Wi-Fi calling on a network. Of course, the Apple Watch can be a useful device to make an emergency call. Though, so can an iPhone or other smartphone. It may be more likely that someone in danger reaches for their phone on instinct.

Some Apple Watch Series 7 users reporting charging issues following watchOS 8.3 update

Some Apple Watch Series 7 users are reporting experiencing charging issues with the smartwatch after updating to watchOS 8.3.

The reports, which appeared on Reddit, Apple’s Support Community and MacRumors’ forums, state that the charging problem seems to mostly be related to third-party chargers no longer working with the Series 7.

In the Reddit post below, user ‘ashfleeburgooben‘ outlines how their 3rd-party charger only charged their Apple watch by roughly 2 percent in an hour.

Some users describe a situation where the Apple Watch Series 7 charges for a few minutes before suddenly stopping. The issue doesn’t seem to be tied to a specific third-party charger brand and instead affects several companies’ devices, including notable names like Belkin. While most of the forum posts related to the issue seem to be tied to the Series 7, there are some reports regarding the Apple Watch Series 6 too.

This is the second time reports regarding Apple Watch charging issues have surfaced in the last few months, though Apple claims to have fixed the problem with watchOS 8.1.1.

For what it’s worth, my Series 7 still appears to be charging normally on my several third-party Apple Watch chargers.
