Belkin reveals new 3-in-1 Apple Watch Series 7 fast charger

Belkin’s new 3-in-1 charger is the first third-party fast charger designed for the Apple Watch Series 7.

The BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Pad features MagSafe 15W charging speeds for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 and of course, fast charging for the Series 7. Apple says that the Series 7 can go from roughly 0-80 percent in 45 minutes with fast charging.

The charger also features a standard Qi charging pad designed for AirPods. It’s also worth noting that the Apple Watch charger portion is adjustable, allowing you to lay the smart watch flat or upright thanks to a small switch on the underside of the charger.

Alongside the 3-in-1 charger, the accessory maker revealed a standalone fast charger for the Apple Watch Series 7 that includes a USB-C cable.

The BoostCharge Pro 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Pad with MagSafe (what a name), is available now through Belkin’s website for $179.95, while the smaller BoostCharge Pro Portable Fast Charger for Apple Watch costs $74.95 and is also available on Belkin’s website.

Apple Watch Series 7 requires at least a 5W USB-C adapter for fast charging

Apple says its new Watch Series 7 can recharge up to 33 percent faster than the Series 6, going from zero to 80 percent in just 45 minutes.

That’s great and all, but you’ll need a few things to make it actually work.

The first (and the easiest) thing is a new USB-C charging cable for the Apple Watch. Thankfully, Apple includes one of these new cables in the box with the Watch Series 7. However, if you need another one, you can get one from the Apple Store for $39.

The other thing you’ll need is a USB-C power brick capable of putting out the right amount of power. Previously, it wasn’t clear how much power the Watch Series 7 needed, but a new support document from Apple (spotted by MacRumors) clears it up.

In short, you’ll need a USB-C power brick that supports at least 5W over USB Power Delivery (USB PD) or greater. Although Apple doesn’t include a power brick in the Watch Series 7 box, it likely won’t be too hard to come by something that puts out at least 5W — for example, the Pixel charger sitting on my desk can output 15W or 18W of power.

As a refresher for those who didn’t read our article about iPhone 13 charging, you can calculate the watt output of a charging bring by multiplying the volts and amps listed in the fine print on the charging brick (assuming the brick doesn’t just list the wattage outright).

It’s also worth noting that if you want to stick with just Apple accessories, the minimum option is Apple’s 18W USB-C charging brick. I couldn’t find the 18W one on the Apple Canada website, but the next step up (20W) is available for $25.

Along with the 18W and 20W options, Apple’s support page says that its 29W, 30W, 61W, 87W or 96W adapters will all fast-charge the Watch Series 7. The 5W requirement stands for third-party chargers.

All that said, there’s probably a decent chance you already have a 5W USB-C charging brick you can use for the new Apple Watch. If not, you can either fork out at least $25 for the Apple brick or grab one of the countless options on Amazon ranging between $10 and $35 in price.

Apple recently announced that the Apple Watch Series 7 would be available to pre-order starting Friday, October 8th at 8am ET/5am PT and will begin shipping on October 15th.

However, at least until now, it has been unclear if Canadian carriers would sell the Series 7 as they have with past versions of Apple’s smartwatch.

With that in mind, Shaw-owned Freedom Mobile has confirmed that it will have the Series 7 available on October 15th. Other carriers, including Rogers and Bell, will also likely sell the Series 7.

The Apple Watch Series 7 features a softer and rounder body shape when compared to previous iterations, along with a 70 percent brighter always-on mode and IP6X dust resistance. The Series 7 will be available in five aluminum case finishes, including Product Red, Refined Blue, Midnight, Starlight and Green.

Further, stainless steel options will be available in ‘Silver,’ ‘Graphite’ and ‘Gold,’ along with an ‘Apple Watch Edition’ in ‘Titanium’ and ‘Black Titanium.’ The Apple Watch Series 7 starts at $529 at Freedom Mobile and the Apple Store.

It’s worth noting that once Series 7 releases, the Apple Watch Series 3 will be discounted from $259 to $249.

Apple Watch Series 7 coming in mid-October, says leaker that was wrong about redesign

In an uncharacteristic move, Apple hasn’t given the Apple Watch Series 7 a specific release date despite revealing it alongside its iPhone 13 lineup and the iPad mini.

The tech giant still officially says that the Series 7 is coming “later this fall.”

However, it looks like eager Apple Watch fans won’t have to wait much longer for the Series 7. According to Jon Prosser (Front Page Tech) — a YouTuber with a checkered record when it comes to leaks — the Series 7 will release in the middle of October.

It’s important to note that Prosser is also the key source of the rumours surrounding the Apple Watch Series 7’s squared-off redesign that didn’t actually happen.

Though nothing has been confirmed yet, it’s likely that pre-orders for the Series 7 will launch in early October and that the wearable will release towards the middle of the month. AppleTrack backs up this claim based on a notification from Hermès that says pre-orders for the series 7 will start on October 8th.

Overall, the Apple Watch Series 7 is a very expected update to the Series 6. For example, the only significant new features are a slightly bigger and brighter display with minimized bezels, and a more curved design.

It’s unclear how much the Apple Watch Series 7 will cost in Canada, but it will likely be priced in the same range as the $529 Series 6.

Surprise, the Apple Watch Series 7 works with older Watch Bands

Even though there was concern from some people (including myself) that the Apple Watch Series 7 wouldn’t work with older Apple Watch bands, that didn’t turn out to be true — likely because the often rumoured flat-edged redesign didn’t actually happen.

New Apple Watch Bands revealed shortly after Apple’s ‘California Streaming’ event — like the Marigold Sport Band, for example — list that they are Series 7-compatible despite the watch’s 1mm increase to 41mm and 45mm, respectively. New 41mm Watch Bands are also compatible with 38mm and 40mm Apple Watches, and 45mm Watch Bands work with the 42mm and 44mm versions of the wearable.

The Apple Watch Series 7 is mostly a pretty expected update to the Series 6. It features a slightly larger screen, slimmer bezels and a more curved body,

The image above is the easiest way to show the differences between the Series 7, Series 6 and Series 3, Apple’s current smartwatch lineup.

Apple’s new Apple Watch Fast Charging USB-C cable is now available

Apple’s new Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C cable is now available for $39 in the Apple Store.

When this new charger is used with the Apple Watch Series 7, Apple says that it charges the smartwatch 33 percent faster than the Series 6, allowing it to reach 80 percent in 45 minutes.

The company also says that the charger is capable of offering eight hours of sleep tracking with 8 minutes of charging. The Series 7 comes with a Magnetic Fast Charger in its box.

Of course, this fast charging also requires an additional $25 20W USB-C power adapter. It’s unclear if Apple plans to continue to include a power brick alongside Apple Watch Series 7, though it’s worth noting that it was still in the Series 6 despite the tech giant first removing it from the iPhone 12’s box.

It’s currently unclear how the Magnetic Fast Charger affects the charging time of older Apple Watches.

Apple Watch Series 7 features softer corners, smaller bezels and a brighter display

Following weeks of rumours, Apple has officially revealed the Apple Watch Series 7.

Regarding new features, Apple says that the Series 7 features “softer, rounder” corners and bezels that measure in at just 1.7mm around the display. Other upgrades include a 70 percent brighter display in always-on mode, IP6X dust resistance and more

During the event, Apple highlighted several new watchOS 8 features, including bike fall detection, new workout algorithms for e-bikes and a new mindfulness app. Apple says watchOS 8’s buttons are also larger, and that the watch includes a new swipe typing interface.

More to come…
