Everything we expect to see at Apple’s fall 2022 event

It’s almost that time of year again.

On September 7th at 1pm ET/10am PT, Apple will hold its ‘Far Out’ keynote at its Cupertino, California campus. While the presentation will feature pre-recorded sections, it’s also the first Apple event with live portions in years.

As always, we have a pretty good idea of what we might see at this year’s fall keynote, including the iPhone 14/iPhone 14 Pro, 2nd-gen AirPods Pro and several new Apple Watches, including the redesigned Apple Watch Pro.

Let’s get into it.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro

Rumours have been swirling about Apple’s iPhone 14 line for months now. First off, the iPhone mini line is being killed off this year in favour of the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, which will be sold alongside the 6.1-inch iPhone 14.

Apple’s iPhone 14 devices are expected to look very similar to last year, including the visible notch and even the same A15 chip. According to reports, only Apple’s higher-end iPhone 14 Pro models will offer the tech giant’s new A16 processor.

The iPhone 14 will also likely be available in various colours.

On the other hand, Apple’s 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max are set to feature more notable upgrades. According to Bloomberg’s often-reliable Mark Gurman, alongside a new A16 chip, Apple’s ‘Pro’ iPhones will ditch the front-facing notch for a pill-shaped camera cutout that houses a 48-megapixel wide shooter capable of capturing 8K video, alongside a circular Face ID sensor.

Some reports indicate Apple plans to fill the display space between the pill-shaped cutout and the circular sensor through software, which, if true, is the most Apple move of all time.

Other rumoured iPhone 14 features include stronger magnets that power exclusive MagSafe accessories that only work with iPhone 14 devices, and emergency calling satellite connectivity.

Apple Watch Pro, Series 8 and SE 2

Next, there’s the slew of new smartwatches that could appear at Apple’s upcoming event.

First off, there’s the Apple Watch Pro, a new high-end, Garmin-like take on the Apple Watch. The more durable version of Apple’s smartwatch is rumoured to feature a flat display and a 1.99-inch screen, making it the largest Apple Watch yet.

Other Apple Watch Pro rumours include that the wearable could offer satellite connectivity, though most reports point to this functionality coming to the high-end smartwatch next year. And finally, there’s a possibility that the Apple Watch Pro might not fit seamlessly with older Watch Bands, marking the first time since the wearable’s launch that older straps won’t work with a new Apple Watch.

Other rumoured Apple Watch Pro features include a new S8 chip and a body temperature sensor, which should also be coming to the Series 8 if rumours are accurate. Overall, the Apple Watch Series 8 is tipped to look and function like the Series 7, with most of the upgrades being on the hardware side.

Finally, there’s the Apple Watch SE 2. Rumours regarding Apple’s entry-level wearable are pretty sparse, but there’s a possibility it could be upgraded with an always-on display and a newer chip since the current version of the smartwatch still features an S5 processor.

2nd-gen AirPods Pro

Like the Apple Watch SE 2, rumours surrounding the 2nd-gen AirPods Pro are few and far between. It’s believed that Apple’s new high-end wireless earbuds will feature shorter stems, upgraded mics, improved sound quality and better battery life.

Some reports highlight a new charging case with USB-C charging and lossless audio support. While we haven’t seen many leaks regarding new AirPods Pro, given the wireless earbuds released back in 2019, they’re arguably long overdue for an upgrade.

iPads, iPad Pro/M2 MacBook Pro, new HomePod and AR headset

Most rumours point to Apple once again holding several keynotes this coming fall, with September 7th’s event focused on the iPhone 14, Apple Watch Pro and the AirPods Pro.

A second event set for October will likely focus on the M2-powered iPad Pro and a new HomePod, followed by a third presentation in November aimed at Apple’s M2 chip and the MacBook Pro. There’s also a possibility we might finally catch a glimpse of the company’s AR/VR headset given most rumours point to it releasing in 2023.

Apple Watch Series 8 could feature new shade of red

The rumoured Apple Watch Series 8 could feature a new shade of red, according to ShrimpApplePro (for the record, this is my new favourite Apple leak account).

Earlier this month, the same account also tweeted that the Series 8 will be available in aluminum in ‘Starlight,’ ‘Midnight,’ ‘Product Red’ and ‘Silver.’ Further, ShrimpApplePro said the stainless steel version will be available in ‘Silver,’ ‘Graphite’ and ‘Gold,’ and there won’t be a titanium model of the wearable.

The leaker goes on to say that the Apple Watch Series 8 will be available in 41mm and 45mm models, similar to the Series 7. Interestingly, ShrimpApplePro also mentions that Apple will add more glue under the Series 8 box pull tab to more clearly indicate when it has been opened. Finally, they also say that the Series 8’s box will still feature a Watch Band and a USB-C-to-MagSafe charger for the wearable.

Alongside the Series 8, Apple is expected to reveal a new rugged Apple Watch Pro that features a redesigned flat display, a larger 2-inch screen and a new S8 chip. Both the Series 8 and the Apple Watch Pro are also expected to feature a new body temperature sensor. Some rumours indicate Apple will also refresh its entry-level Apple Watch SE, though it remains unclear what will be added to the smartwatch.

Apple is expected to reveal its Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Pro, Apple Watch SE, iPhone 14 series and new AirPods at its upcoming ‘Far Out’ keynote on September 7th.

Apple to revamp the look of its upcoming high-end ‘Pro’ Watch Series 8

Rumours about Apple’s inevitable Series 8 Watch have started floating around in recent weeks. Now, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, Apple’s upcoming high-end “Pro” Watch will feature a series redesign, alongside a “larger display, longer battery life and the body-temperature sensor.”

Gurman says the new high-end model will be “a good bit bigger” than its predecessors, with a screen that is roughly 7 percent larger, on top of a redesigned look. Apple last majorly redesigned the Apple Watch in 2018 with the release of the Series 4, and is only now redesigning the watch’s look with Series 8. If this pattern is to be followed, the subsequent update to the Apple Watch will come in 2026 with the Series 12.

Gurman’s report also mentions how the new model will be an evolution of the watch’s current rectangular shape and won’t feature a circular layout. Further, the upcoming high-end watch won’t have the rumoured flat sides and will be made of a more durable formulation of titanium and other materials.

Gurman’s information matches that of leaker ‘ShimpApplePro,’ who said back in May that the Series 8 will feature flat glass and squared-off sides.

Beyond these leaks, not much is known about the upcoming Apple Watch series. Apple is expected to reveal the new version of the Apple Watch this coming fall alongside its iPhone 14 series.

Apple Watch Series 8 could feature redesign with flat display

The Apple Watch Series 7 didn’t receive the significant redesign some predicted, but Apple might have planned to save that new look for the Series 8.

According to a new rumour from a leaker known as ‘ShimpApplePro’ (yes, this is their actual username), the front of the Series 8 will feature flat glass, and the sides of the wearable will be squared-off.

In renders created by sometimes reliable leaker Jon Prosser, the overall design of the Series 8 looks very similar to the look of the current iPhone 13 and iPad Pro.

It’s important to note that Prosser was behind leaks from last May predicting that the Apple Watch Series 7 would feature a flat design with squared-off edges, and that didn’t end up happening. At the time, Prosser mentioned there’s a possibility this design could be coming to the Series 8, so there may still be some truth to that leak.

Rumours point to Apple launching three new Apple Watches this year: an Apple Watch Series 8, a 2nd-gen Apple Watch SE and a new, more durable ‘Explorer Edition’ of the wearable designed for extreme sports. Prosser suggests that the squared-off redesign is likely coming to all three new versions of the  Apple Watch.

Apple Watch Series 8 could feature body temperature measurement

It’s no secret that Apple’s smartwatch line has remained pretty stagnant for the last few generations.

However, that could soon change — at least as far as its sensors are concerned — if a new report from often-reliable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is accurate. According to Kuo, the Apple Watch Series 8 could feature a built-in body temperature sensor if it’s able to “meet Apple’s high requirements before mass production.”

Kuo says that the Series 7 was supposed to feature a body temperature sensor but “failed to qualify before entering [the] EVT stage last year.” According to Kuo, body temperature measurement is difficult to add to a wearable because “skin temperature quickly varies depending on outside environments.”

Kuo’s report backs up reports sourced from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, stating that Apple’s next-gen Apple Watch will feature a body temperature sensor.

Beyond the above leak, not much is known about the Apple Watch Series 8 or watchOS 8. Apple’s next-gen Apple Watch is expected to release this coming fall, likely during a September or October hardware event.

Apple Watch blood pressure tracking features reportedly delayed to 2024

Rumours regarding the Apple Watch featuring a blood-pressure monitoring feature have been swirling since before the wearable was even released, and it appears those eagerly anticipating the functionality will be forced to wait a little longer.

Several reports from last year indicated that blood-pressure monitoring could arrive alongside the Apple Watch Series 7 last fall, but those rumours didn’t turn out to be accurate. Now, a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests blood-pressure monitoring might not make its way to Apple’s wearable until 2024.

Bloomberg says that Apple is experiencing difficulties with the monitor’s accuracy. The report goes on to say that the Apple Watch won’t be capable of recording specific blood-pressure readings and that instead, will alert users about hypertension and suggest contacting their doctor.

Like blood-pressure tracking functionality, rumours surrounding blood sugar monitoring and the Apple Watch have been circulating for years. Gurman says that this feature is likely still several years away and that there’s currently no rumour regarding its target release date.

Apple’s upcoming watchOS 9 update is expected to feature refreshed older Watch Faces, expanded women’s health functionality, and a better low-power mode.

Apple Watch Series 8 will reportedly feature body temperature sensors

Even though the Apple Watch Series 7 hasn’t officially been revealed yet, we’re already encountering rumours surrounding next year’s inevitable Series 8.

As first reported by 9to5Mac, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple’s 2022 Apple Watch will feature several new health sensors, including body temperature measurement. Past rumours have also suggested that glucose monitoring could also finally make its way to the Apple Watch with the Series 8.

Along with rumours surrounding the Series 8, Kuo says that health features are coming to Apple’s AirPods in two years. However, it’s unclear what version of the AirPods will receive the features. Earlier reports have stated that the next version of Apple’s AirPods Pro will include new motion sensors and built-in fitness tracking.

It’s also possible that Apple could have plans to release a fitness-focused version of its standard AirPods, though given the 3rd-gen AirPods are rumoured to be revealed later this week, that’s unlikely.

Rumours also recently appeared regarding Apple’s plans to increase the iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max’s top storage tier to 1TB. For more on Apple’s September 14th event, check out my round-up of everything we expect to see during the stream.
