Apple bumps up the entry-level iPad to the A13 Bionic chipset

Apple is bringing the base-level iPad up-to-date with a few new more modern features. However, the tablet still looks like it always has, including its large bezels and home button.

Other features include a 12-megapixel selfie camera, a True Tone display and the A13 Bionic chipset, making it 20 percent faster than last year’s iPad.

Since the new iPad has a better selfie camera, it’s also able to use the ‘Center Stage’ feature Apple announced alongside the latest iteration of the iPad Pro. This feature allows you to move around your room while the camera tracks you.

Apple’s often-rumoured VR headset could feature 3,000ppi Micro OLED display

Apple’s rumoured virtual reality/augmented reality headset could include a high-resolution micro OLED display with 3,000 pixels per inch (ppi), according to South Korean publication The Elec.

If true, this would mean the headset features one of the highest display resolutions in a VR headset yet. Previous rumours have hinted that Apple is working on two head-mounted devices, including a pair of Apple augmented reality glasses that look like regular glasses and feature built-in AR notifications and a more traditional VR/AR headset.

The Elec’s report says that Apple has requested a sample from APS Holdings, a South Korean company that uses a process called Fine Metal Mask (FMM) to create next-gen OLED displays. Apple has reportedly asked for a sample of APS’ laser patterning FMM screen that features a 3,000ppi.

“Pixel sizes in OLED panels used in smartphones and TVs range from 40 micrometers to 300 micrometers. Those in MicroOLED panel range from 4 micrometers to 20 micrometers. MicroOLED also has microseconds response time and is a likely candidate to be used for VR and augmented reality (AR) applications,” reads the Elec’s report

A previous report from The Information indicated that Apple’s VR headset will feature two 8K displays and a price tag of approximately $3,000 USD (roughly $3,799 CAD).

Though leaks regarding the VR headset’s potential release date are a little all over the place, it’s likely we won’t catch a glimpse of the rumoured devices until at least 2022.

Epic CEO says company paid Apple $6 million as ordered

Epic Games has paid Apple $6 million USD (roughly $7.6 million CAD) for violating the iPhone maker’s App Store guidelines.

The payment follows last week’s ruling in the Epic v. Apple lawsuit, which was largely a loss for Epic. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers handed down the ruling on September 10th — it determined that Apple’s App Store was not a monopoly but that the company had engaged in some anti-competitive practices. Gonzalez Rogers ruled that Apple would need to allow other forms of in-app purchases.

Beyond that, Epic lost on every other count. Moreover, the judge ruled Epic would need to pay Apple 30 percent of the $12.1 million USD it earned between August and October 2020 plus 30 percent of any revenue earned between November 2020 and today.

As for why Epic was on the hook to pay Apple, it all traces back to the beginning of the lawsuit. In August 2020, Epic added its own payment method to Fortnite. That led Apple to boot the game off the App Store — however, those who already had it installed could still play (eventually, an update made the app unusable). During that time, the game still made money, and that’s why Epic was on the hook to pay Apple.

Epic, obviously, isn’t a fan of the ruling. The company has already announced plans to appeal, and CEO Tim Sweeney previously tweeted that Fortnite will return to the App Store only when it can “offer in-app payment in fair competition with Apple in-app payment.” The tweet seems to ignore the fact that it’s up to Apple when (and if) Fortnite can return to the App Store.

Sweeney also tweeted confirmation that Epic paid Apple the $6 million with a somewhat cringey joke: the tweet included a picture of the Apple Pay logo.

Apple releases OS updates to fix spyware hack uncovered by University of Toronto researchers

Just ahead of Apple’s iPhone 13 reveal event, the tech giant has released iOS 14.8, iPadOS 14.8, watchOS 7.6.2 and macOS Big Sur 11.6 to solve a pair of significant security issues affecting several of its devices.

All four updates don’t add new features to their respective devices’ operating systems but include important security fixes. The first fix relates to iOS’, iPadOS’ and macOS’ CoreGraphics framework and the other is tied to Apple’s WebKit browser feature.

Pegasus security update

Apple says that it became aware of vulnerabilities that take advantage of these frameworks to run malicious code. For example, regarding the CoreGraphics exploit, apple mentions that a “maliciously crafted PDF” could lead to “arbitrary code execution.”

According to The Washington Post, one of the flaws was uncovered by the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab and is linked directly to Pegasus spyware. Alongside Apple, Citizen Lab advises Apple users to update their devices as soon as possible.

Check out Citizen Lab’s website for a very detailed breakdown of the exploits.

Apple to reportedly hold second fall hardware event for iPad and MacBook Pro reveal

During Apple’s September 14th event, we’ll likely see the iPhone 13 series, the Apple Watch Series 7 and a new pair of AirPods.

What we probably won’t catch a glimpse of are the tech giant’s new entry-level iPad/iPad mini and the long-awaited MacBook Pro refresh.

According to a recent tweet from Bloomberg’s nearly always reliable Mark Gurman, Apple reportedly plans to hold two events: one for the “iPhone/Watch” and another later this fall for the “Mac + iPad.” This backs up previous rumours that circulated a few months ago.

While Apple’s iPad refresh is rumoured to only feature a new processor and possibly a thinner design, the iPad mini will reportedly get the iPad Pro treatment with more squared-off sides and the removal of the home button. On the other hand, Apple’s upcoming MacBook Pro redesign is rumoured to include a new version of MagSafe, an SD card slot, an entirely new look an and upgraded version of Apple’s M1 chip.

Leaked photos reveal new iPhone 13 case colours

Despite the fact that Apple’s iPhone 13 event is just a day away, leaks regarding the tech giant’s next iPhone are still appearing.

Following a rumour that the largest storage option for the iPhone 13 Pro/iPhone 13 Pro Max will be 1TB, we’ve caught a glimpse of very official-looking leaked cases for Apple’s upcoming smartphone line.

Shared on Twitter via an account called @MajinBuOfficial, the images include a screenshot and a photo of several iPhone 13 cases. The colour options look very similar to last year’s official Apple iPhone 12 cases save for a few new additions, including a cool-looking orange option.

The cases show off the same rather large square cutout featured in the iPhone 12 series and squared-off edges, which backs up rumours regarding the smartphone.

At the tech giant’s September 14th event, Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 13 series, the Apple Watch Series 7 and new AirPods.

For more detail on what to expect from Apple’s next hardware event, check out my recap.

Apple will reportedly start selling all 24-inch iMac (2021) colours in its retail stores

While Apple’s upcoming ‘California Streaming’ event will likely be focused on the tech giant’s iPhone 13, Apple Watch Series 7 and AirPods, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company will also reportedly announce that it will soon be possible to buy every version of Apple’s colourful 24-inch iMac in-store.

This means that all seven 24-inch iMac colours, including ‘Blue,’ ‘Green,’ ‘Pink,’ ‘Silver,’ ‘Yellow,’ ‘Orange,’ ‘Purple,’ will all be available to purchase directly in Apple Stores. Additional colours will also now be available through third-party retailers like Best Buy. Previously, certain colours, like Yellow, Purple and Orange, needed to be ordered online, despite display units being present in stores.

When I reviewed Apple’s colourful iMac a few months ago, I was impressed with the redesign but disappointed with its lack of ports and expensive price tag. A 27-inch iMac with a more powerful version of Apple’s M1 chip and a discrete graphics card is reportedly in the works.

At Apple’s upcoming September 14th hardware event, we likely won’t get any news regarding new Macs, including the often-rumoured 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro redesign. The reveal of Apple’s redesigned MacBook line that reportedly includes an SD card reader and a new version of MagSafe, will reportedly happen in October or November.

Apple Watch Series 8 will reportedly feature body temperature sensors

Even though the Apple Watch Series 7 hasn’t officially been revealed yet, we’re already encountering rumours surrounding next year’s inevitable Series 8.

As first reported by 9to5Mac, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple’s 2022 Apple Watch will feature several new health sensors, including body temperature measurement. Past rumours have also suggested that glucose monitoring could also finally make its way to the Apple Watch with the Series 8.

Along with rumours surrounding the Series 8, Kuo says that health features are coming to Apple’s AirPods in two years. However, it’s unclear what version of the AirPods will receive the features. Earlier reports have stated that the next version of Apple’s AirPods Pro will include new motion sensors and built-in fitness tracking.

It’s also possible that Apple could have plans to release a fitness-focused version of its standard AirPods, though given the 3rd-gen AirPods are rumoured to be revealed later this week, that’s unlikely.

Rumours also recently appeared regarding Apple’s plans to increase the iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max’s top storage tier to 1TB. For more on Apple’s September 14th event, check out my round-up of everything we expect to see during the stream.
