Travelers Canada releases results of distracted driving risk survey

The 2023 Travelers Canada Distracted Driving Risk Survey results have been released by Travelers Canada, revealing data about distracted driving in the country.

A major survey result showed that Canadians often engage in risky behaviours behind the wheel despite recognizing the associated risks. Nearly one-quarter of respondents acknowledged that multitasking while driving was dangerous but did so anyway.

Paul Stone, the vice president of personal insurance, sales, distribution and marketing for Travelers Canada, said that distracted driving behaviour includes everything from texting, checking emails and driving while under emotional strain, all of which can lead to accidents.

The survey also showed that instances of distracted driving crashes are increasing, with 30 percent of drivers saying they have been involved in an accident due to their own distractions. That’s a 50 percent increase from last year.

The biggest causes of distracted driving remain: observing the behaviours of other drivers, talking on a phone (hands-free) and focusing on traffic, with 78, 63 and 62 percent accounting for each, respectively.

However, the survey did take the opportunity to ask respondents what it would take for them to be less likely to use a device while driving, with 90 percent answering “if a passenger asked them to stop.”

For more information about the survey, visit TravelersCanada.ca.

BMW owner’s can finally use Digital Key Plus with Android devices

BMW owners are celebrating the company’s move to make its Digital Key Plus app compatible with Android devices, making it possible for users to lock, unlock, and start their BMWs while leaving the phone in their pocket.

The Digital Key Plus app was originally only compatible with iOS devices such as iPhones and Apple Watches. Now, the company has enabled the app to work with Android devices version 13.1 or later, bringing the German car giant closer to “identical functionality across all platforms.”

The car company also began offering cross-platform sharing of the standard Digital Key functionality via email and messaging applications. Its next step is to offer a full range of comfort access functions” on both operating systems.

Although initially planned to be available to all BMW models produced from November 2022, a future update will allow for use in vehicles with earlier production dates.

The app can be downloaded directly on Android devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S23, effectively replacing BMW’s physical key. Through ultra-wideband technology, users can allow their vehicles to lock and unlock when they approach and walk away automatically, as well as start the engine and turn on the car’s lights. The lock/unlock feature even works if the user’s phone is dead within a limit of five hours.

BMW users can also add up to five other users, giving access to the app’s features to family members or anyone else driving.

Mini’s cars introduce Spike the English Bulldog as its new personal assistant

British car brand Mini has revealed a new “intelligent personal assistant” for one of its vehicles, none other than Spike the English Bulldog.

That’s right, the animated canine companion will be taking to the cockpit of the company’s first all-electric MINI Crossover SAV, the Mini Concept Aceman, to act as the driver’s personal assistant.

The cute bulldog has been a symbol of the Mini brand as far back as 2001, appearing in a handful of past advertisements. Although Mini looks to be refreshing people’s minds about the spokesdog, his first major appearance since the announcement will be at the Shanghai auto show, which runs from April 18th-27th, 2023.

Mini plans on integrating Spike into future production models as well, such as the 2023 Mini Countryman, the 2024 Mini Cooper and the 2025 Aceman Crossover SUV, according to Carscoops.

Delightfully appealing? Absolutely. Nostalgic? It’s debatable. But what exactly does Spike do for the user?

Spike will apparently be providing “various forms of support” to users of Aceman from the car’s OLED dashboard display. More details are expected to follow at the Shanghai event and throughout the year.

“We are now taking Spike into the future as a digital character,” said Oliver Heilmer, the design head for the brand. “He is not just a design experiment – he is becoming a characterful companion for the user experience.”

For a car company that already pushes a uniquely fun and quirky experience, Spike is looking like the perfect addition to assist drivers all while looking adorable while doing it.

Turo survey shows the current economic climate favours hybrid, electric cars

The cost of inflation has not been kind to Canadians recently, especially those in the market for a new car.

However, despite concerns about high costs, some people are considering making the switch from a combustion engine vehicle to a hybrid, or even fully electric model.

Canada’s leading car-sharing marketplace Turo conducted its second annual Car Ownership Index in January 2023. The Car Ownership Index is a “benchmark study” used to analyze the current state of car ownership and usage in Canada.

The study found that 39 percent of those surveyed are less likely to buy or lease a vehicle as a result of the current increase in inflation rates.

Those that are in the market for a new vehicle, are looking at those that support non-traditional energy sources such as hybrid and electric vehicles.

And it’s not just a handful of Canadians that are interested.

Over half of Canadians surveyed are looking for an alternative to combustion vehicles, with 38 percent favouring hybrid models and 16 percent interested in buying or leasing fully electric vehicles (EVs.)

That’s 54 percent of the total survey that is considering making the jump.

Although 26 percent of those surveyed are interested due to the environmental benefits proposed by driving non-combustion vehicles, a much larger amount of those considering hybrid and EVs are doing so because of one main reason — the cost.

In fact, the survey showed that 38 percent of those interested in buying or leasing EVs are driven by a desire to save money on gas.

Unfortunately for those with growing interest, there are some lingering doubts about transitioning to an EV.

The primary concerns about buying or leasing an EV include the cost, the availability of charging stations, and the charging frequency for the vehicles.

The survey was conducted for Turo by Leger, the largest Canadian-owned market research and analytics company. It ran from January 9th to 18th, 2023 and consisted of a sample of 1,500 English or French-speaking Canadians that were 25 years of age or older.

New Hyundai Kona EV boasts 17 percent more range than its predecessor

Hyundai has unveiled its 2nd-gen Kona electric vehicle (EV), a sleeker and more powerful version of the entry model compact electric crossover.

The Kona EV now comes with a higher capacity 65.4kWh battery option that provides an estimated 304 miles (489.2km) of range using the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) testing cycle.

For reference, the current Hyundai Kona has a max range of 258 miles, or 415km. Further, Hyundai claims that battery preconditioning improves charging times and cold weather range, alongside vehicle-to-load support that allows you to power devices both inside and outside of the car.

For a smoother and more efficient driving experience, the Kona now supports “i-Pedal” one-pedal driving, allowing you to accelerate and slow down your vehicle with the accelerator pedal only.

It’s worth noting that a higher range doesn’t equate to faster charging speeds. The Kona doesn’t have the 800V architecture of the Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6, so it will take roughly 41 minutes to charge from 10 percent to 80 percent. The Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6, on the other hand, can go from 10 percent to 80 percent in roughly 18 minutes.

The vehicle has also received slight upgrades to its interior. The vehicle offers more storage, a frunk (front trunk), and plenty of in-cabin tech.

Hyundai hasn’t revealed Canadian or U.S. pricing for the upcoming Kona EV, but the automaker says it will still be available in combustion-only and hybrid versions in addition to the electric variant.

The automaker and Natural Resources Canada recently revealed that its upcoming Ioniq 6 EV is capable of driving 581km per charge.

Elon Musk and Tesla being sued over misleading self driving claims

Tesla and Elon Musk are being sued by shareholders over misleading self driving claims.

According to the report, Musk and Tesla were sued on Monday, February 27th, with the main reason being the company overstating the effectiveness and safety of Tesla vehicles’ Autopilot and Full Self-Driving tech.

The class action was filed in a San Francisco federal court, with the shareholders saying that the company has defrauded them over the course of the past four years. The technologies in question are suspected as a possible cause of fatal crashes, and capable of causing “a serious risk of accident and injury.”

The shareholders, along with believing in the company’s vision, also want to make money on their investment. According to the suit, the shareholders claim that Tesla’s share price fell multiple times as the truth about the technologies became known, including after investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and reports that the Securities and Exchange Commission was investigating Musk’s Autopilot claims.

A recent FSD bug caused the automobile company to recall over 362,000 vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the FSD bug “may” cause Tesla vehicles to crash. The NHTSA added that FSD allows Teslas to “exceed speed limits or travel through intersections in an unlawful or unpredictable manner increases the risk of a crash.” The vehicle could drive straight through an intersection while in a turn-only and enter an intersection with a stop sign without coming to a complete stop.

The recall caused Tesla’s shares to slide by 5.7 percent on Thursday, February 16th.

The lawsuit is led by shareholder Thomas Lamontagne with Tesla, Musk, Zachary J. Kirkhorn and Deepak Ahuja as the primary defendants. Lamontagne is seeking unspecified damages from Tesla for the February 19th, 2019 to February 17th, 2023 timeframe.

Buick unveils new forward-thinking Wildcat EV concept in Canada

GM is showcasing the Buick Wildcat EV concept across the Canadian Auto Show circuit to establish that an all-electric future will include a brand that’s seen brighter days in the past.

If pushing the envelope on design is part of the story, then Buick hasn’t been synonymous with that sort of thing — at least not lately. Once a brand leaning toward luxury, Buick escaped the proverbial scrap heap in the 2009 bailout and subsequent restructuring that flatlined the likes of Pontiac, Saturn, Saab and Hummer. But like Hummer, EVs are an opportunity to revisit a brand’s purpose and reintroduce it to new drivers.

The Wildcat is still a concept, yet it looks like a radical departure for Buick, including the new tri-shield logo adorned at the front. The pickings have been slim for a while now. Up to February 2023, there are only three models available in Canada: Encore, Enclave and Envision — all of them crossovers or SUVs. There are other models, but only in overseas markets, like China. The Wildcat is a sedan, perhaps marking a change in strategy.

Design

It’s funny because “Buick” and “sedan” went together for a long time. The market shift to crossovers and SUVs has been a boon to keeping Buick alive in North America, but the Wildcat is supposed to be a nod to the brand’s legacy with a focus on its all-electric future. Beauty is subjective, but I think this vehicle looks pretty slick, and it apparently influenced the design for the new 2024 Encore GX, and will do so for others too.

This EV concept is itself inspired by the Wildcat of old, when Buick first unveiled a concept under the name in 1953. Its history in muscle performance also plays a role here, given the power this concept is supposed to have, though those details are still unclear because it’s not meant to sell to consumers. The 2 x 2 coupe design features a lower centre of gravity thanks to a sloped roofline that appears to merge with the windshield and windows.

From the headlights to the tail lights, even down to charging indicators in the hatchback glass and the turbine-looking wheels, everything just looks flashy.

I didn’t get to sit inside, but Buick chose to try a few things in the cabin as well. The translucent steering wheel is one of them, as is the aluminum trim that seems to be everywhere. The centre console “floats” from the front to the rear seats, while a 30.4-inch touchscreen cuts across the driver’s side over to the infotainment screen in the middle of the dash.

Buick says the interior was “built to be a platform for futuristic features such as artificial intelligence, biometrics and aromatherapy.” That means it would theoretically be able to monitor a driver’s heart rate and adjust vehicle settings to calm any nerves, like dimming cabin lights, activating the massage feature in the seat or releasing an aromatic fragrance. No surprise, it’s calling this “Zen Mode.”

All in on electric

GM’s stated goal is to be fully electric by 2035, while Cadillac will lead the charge (no pun intended) by pulling that off five years earlier. It’s also been confirmed technologies in the Wildcat EV concept will make their way to upcoming Buicks. We just don’t know what and when.

Since Buick is keeping the electrification specs and features closer to the chest, company reps didn’t reveal anything about range, charging or performance. It’s a fully drivable vehicle, that much is clear, except there’s nothing official about the powertrain or even how driver autonomy might figure into the whole thing.

Going forward, Buick EVs will fall under a common name, Electra, fitting right in with the existing models that all start with the letter ‘E’. The company was also mum on whether it is testing specific electric driving features or even swapping out parts. It was built with GM’s Ultium battery platform, the underside housing the cells and forming the basis for the chassis.

Getting younger

Buick knows it needs to cater to a younger crowd to compete long-term, and isn’t really hiding that. The design all but confirms it, as it bears so little resemblance to anything in the current lineup. The words “dynamic,” “fresh” and “bold” came up often in conversations I had with reps at the show.

Over the next 18 months, Buick plans to release about five new vehicles “that will have a lot of cues” taken from the Wildcat EV. We’ll have to see when they roll out.

Tesla’s economic impact: created 6,600 full-time jobs for Canadians in 2021

Tesla opened its first international store in Canada inside Toronto’s Yorkdale Mall in 2012. Since then, the Elon Musk-owned automotive company has come a long way. The company detailed results from a recent study that observed the economic impact it’s had in Canada, via Enviroeconomics.

According to the organization, Tesla asked it to “assess the economic impact of their Canadian operations and spending, as well as the emission reductions and operational fuel savings associated with Tesla vehicles in Canada.” Enviroeconomics found that Tesla’s economic impact in Canada is significant, and it is continuing to grow.

It found that Tesla spending growth in the country increased by 25 percent year-over-year between 2019 and 2021 across automotive parts, charging stations, manufacturing and retail operations to $836 million in 2021, from $424 million in 2018. The company’s spending also benefited 51 economic sectors in Canada across a variety of industries.

In 2021 alone, the spending contributed $762 million to Canada’s GDP, while creating more than 6,600 full-time jobs for Canadians. Enviroeconomics says that 3,100 of these jobs are a direct result of Tesla operating in the country and spending on goods and services.

Apart from adding money to the Canadian economy, the company’s vehicles aided Canadians in saving an estimated $113 million in fuel costs in 2021 alone, and that number surely would have gone up in 2022. Tesla owners also helped avoid over 580,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions between 2018 and 2021.

Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 can drive an estimated 581km per charge

While it’s still unclear when Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 sedan electric vehicle (EV) will launch in Canada (you can’t even place a pre-order yet), more information about the anticipated vehicle is beginning to be released.

According to Hyundai and Natural Resources Canada, the EVs’ overall mileage comes in as follows depending on the model:

Ioniq 6 Preferred RWD Long Range (18-inch wheels): 581km
Ioniq 6 Preferred AWD Long Range (18-inch wheels): 509km
Ioniq 6 Preferred AWD Long Range AWD: 435km

Before you get too excited, it’s important to note that these are just estimates. In my experience, particularly with the Ioniq 5, the range is far less — especially under cold weather conditions. Still, this is an impressive range, especially from the RWD Long Range.

The automaker has still not revealed the range of the standard version of the Ioniq 6 or its Canadian price tag. In the U.S., it’s believed the Ioniq 6 will start at $44,000 USD (about $59,000 CAD).

Latest Tesla update brings Apple Music and Mahjong to your car

One of the key advantages Tesla’s electric vehicles (EVs) offer over competitors are the rapid software updates that add new features to its cars.

In the EV company’s latest holiday update (version 2022.44.25), Tesla has brought several new features to its fleet, including official Apple Music support, which joins Spotify and Tidal, and of course, the addition of Mahjong to its ‘Tesla Arcade.’

Other new features include Dog Mode, which allows users to leave their furry friends safely in their vehicle with climate control on. Finally, there are also improvements to Tesla’s ‘Light Show’ feature that syncs headlights with music, allowing users to schedule a show 10 minutes in advance or set up a “multi-car orchestra,” alongside other minor user-interface changes.

Why would someone want to create a light show with their car? Who knows. Still, it’s great to see Apple Music finally make its way to Tesla’s EVs.

It’s worth pointing out that using Apple Music requires a Tesla Premium Connectivity subscription, which costs $13.99/month. This cost is on top of Apple Music’s $10.99/month cost.
